License-fu : advice on updating (?) older versions

OK so this is complicated but here goes-

Due to the sunsetting of the elicenser, I updated my Cubase V11 to V14 and moved my licenses to SB licensing. Done.

HOWEVER- I have an older Mac laptop running High Sierra ( OS 10.13… .can’t be updated ) which although unsupported used to run my Cubase V11 perfectly for what I needed (playback only), but now can’t run V14 because it can’t do SB licensing and the SB licensing conversion cancelled the V11 elicenser version.

I had a plan… in my account I had an unused Cubase Elements V8 code which I activated and was able to get Cubase Elements V8 running on the old laptop with the elicenser. However there been a few playback glitches, and SB document that V8 wasn’t supported on High Sierra… I need Cubase Elements 9 -9.5. So close!

How do I do that? I can download elements V9.5 … but where do I get a licenser code? Do I have to buy the Elements V8 - V 14 upgrade and hope it lets V9.5 run?

Sorry for the edge case … story of my life!

I am aware that when elicensing ends the laptop will be locked in time…which it is already!

Why not continue to run C11 on the Mac? You still have that license. It will work as long as the dongle continues to work without regrad to the end of lifr for the Elicenser system.

I was using V11 via a dongle to run CB on both the old mac ( when I needed it ) and my newer studio machine.

If I left the V11 on the dongle it wouldn’t be upgradable when elicence ends. No dongle licensed software will be. So my V11 would be stuck there. Seemed a waste!

Once my V11 was upgraded to V14 it made sense to move it to SB licensing so it can continue to be upgraded. This disables the elicence authentication completely. So now the new V14 or older V11 now require SB licensing.

This is ok on my studio machine, however SB licensing is not supported on Mac OS High Sierra … so no, I can’t run it on the old laptop anymore.

Thus the fall back V8 which was a version included with some hardware I bought years ago. It IS compatible with a dongle.

I just want to get it to V9 /9.5 which is the most compatible version for OS High Sierra before dongle upgrades conclude.

Phew :face_exhaling:

But it is still on the dongle, and will continue working on your Mac indefinitely.

Which says in part,

After the process has been completed, the name of the old license will have the affix “(Upgraded to [name of new license] with Steinberg Licensing)

Thanks Steve! Your advice is spot on. It all worked out as you said.

I was under the impression that once the elicencer based V11 was upgraded to V14 and ‘moved’ to the SB license system the old dongle based V11 would stop working. But it doesn’t! I now have V14 under a SB license, and the dongle still runs V11 ( and versions prior ) and is listed as "Upgraded to V14 with SB Licensing). I even downloaded and installed V 9.5 ( officially supported for my old OS ) and it runs fine too. So I’m all set !!
