If anyone uses the Freeze columns/rows function in Microsoft Excel, it won’t be difficult to understand how useful having the ability to divide left/right ( in addition to the existing top/bottom divider) would be in Cubase.
Ever find yourself copying events from earlier in the project to later and scrolling tediously horizontally to find your position?
Ever need to compare sections from one bar to another bar much later in the song?
Need to record fresh passes of similar sections at different points in the project?
Want to jump the cursor around your project for playback in an early bar and then a much later position?
Yes, definitely a very useful feature, certainly for composers. Viewing (and editing) similar and/or different sections at the same time is extremely important.
Split the project area vertically or alternatively, like Dorico, open the project in multiple windows!
I can get onboard with this idea. A vertical “Divide Track List” or multiple “Project Windows” could be useful for working on simultaneous parts of the project during various stages of production, mixing or mastering etc.
Personally I’d find the ability to divide the timeline much more useful than dividing the Track list.
And even that could be improved if it worked more like in Excel. In Cubase a Track is exclusively assigned to either the top or bottom section - but not both. In Excel all the rows are available in both sections. So you can scroll to show any row in either section.
Just to clarify, the current function inside of Cubase is officially named “Divide Track List”. That is the one that can divide the “Project Window” horizontally. I also acknowledge that the naming is odd.
Well I was referring to having the ability to divide the “Project Window / Timeline” vertically, and also the ability to have multiple un-docked Project Windows opened at the same time.
Not many other DAWs to my knowledge do the track list divide thing, Cubase can really pioneer a new way of viewing projects here with this additional feature.
