Maybe I’m missing something here but how do I see the entire timeline with all songs displayed in a linear way?
Problem - I want to crossfade some elements between songs but when I create a new song the view defaults to bar 1, and I cannot see the preceding song tracks etc. Attempting to change the part 1 to a different bar informs me that the bar must begin at 1?
I want to have some songs straddling a video - so one video may be ten minutes long and there may be two or three songs (musical pieces really, not everything is a song).
Additionally as parts cannot have tempo changes, it may be necessary to use songs for sections, just to allow for musical changes. Or is VSTL completely rigid in this fashion? I hope not! I want to crossfade some audio tracks too.
I like the ergonomics more than the competition but right now I’ve hit a stumbling block that may not allow me to use it for my purposes.
Easiest way to describe would be to imagine an Opera - a lot of continuous music, with “songs” and different settings tempos etc. But you wouldn’t expect to not see the entire show in a linear fashion.
Some advice here would be great, I’m not finding a lot of info in the manual (generally find that Steinberg manual are written as if you already know more than you do - with the notable exception of Dorico!)
Hi @Dr_Scardo !
That’s the point, finally “we/users” have a show control app where all songs has their own song container with all the tiny details.
The new mediaplayer module is right implemented to the last recent version for similar purposes Have you tried it? (for a video that leasts more song, u need to add as a GLOBAL Module)
I have Cubase 13pro, doing all editing (incl. tempo) then exporting the song for importing it to VSTLive. I have then a perfect TEMPO and SIGNATURE mapping, also (my tipp) to lock both tracks. @Spork does VL support an e.g. 60min long song if needed?
Oh dear that’s not going to work… I need a visual timeline that is not limited in terms of crossover between different elements. I may try using Nuendo or Cubase as I believe I can use two video tracks. And that’ll give me the flexibility with tempo and key sigs. I guess I’ll have to sync it with something else to control the DMX.
Darn it I bought VSTL in the sale - looks like I spent my money too quickly!
I’m sure, you will change your mind later… but yes, VSTLive’s point is to have separated timeline/song…
BUT, you can put together a “one song timeline” too. Until you can crossfade within the app, you can create more audio tracks and do fade-out and fade-in for the another one at the “meeting position” So no worries…
Even you can prepare your project … now with all DAW’s that supports DAWproject (bounce crossfaded things together… etc… even better) then export to VSTLive and handle them as “One single song”
As otherwise you can add videos… as many as you want, etc
I’m helping a friend of mine for a special production in January where they need a 60min project, so we decided to use PARTS as bookmarks.
Thanks fkalmus & ciro - yes, I’d already come to that conclusion. I’m going to continue to check out different solutions. One of which will be the continuous audio, or multiple tracks in one “song” - but in the end it may just be easier to use Nuendo and run the video and lights in another app altogether. I cannot work without having a complete overview of every element in the show. OK I can do without VSTL’s metronome just by importing a click track/s for each section.
A lot of work to discover the best solution. Will keep trying.
