The Play section of Dorico is still largely terra incognita to me, I’m afraid, so I need a bit of help with the Steinberg Limiter. Having read some posts and replies, I applied it to the the main output channel, but I was wondering whether it would be preferable, with the very large orchestra I’m using, to apply it to every one of the 50 or so instrument strips in the mixer individually. If so (before I start on what would be quite a time-consuming task), is there a quick method that will apply the same limiter setting to all of them at once - some kind of Select All command?
No, that’s not a good idea. It’s not usual to limit individual tracks, although there can be exceptional circumstances in which it’s a good thing to do.
I have run into this with running individual EQ plugins on mixer channels. The best solution I have come up with, is to create a template file, and never re-apply my playback template. My playback template consists of only the Noteperformer single output endpoints for all wind instruments. I add everything else manually via the library manager - playing techniques, playback techniques, percussion kits, percussion maps, custom instrument definitions, etc. I then manually load the additional VSTs I need in the play mode VST rack. This causes things to be out of order in the mixer sometimes, which is a minor inconvenience compared to what happens if you re-apply the playback template - it removes all the plugins on any instrument track, and applies a reverence plugin to the FX 1 track, and a compressor to the master output.
I also have a stage template so that I can get the reverb sends and panning correctly when I add instruments to my template. The stage template will not save the reverb plugin/setting you have applied, and will automatically load reverence. To get instruments to appear in the stage template, you will have to check the box for “apply stage template settings” in the respective expression maps for each vst instrument you load that uses a custom expression mapping.
On the master output, my chain is this:
Dynamic overall mix EQ > Steinberg Maximizer plugin set to modern and 40% > Steinberg limiter set to -1db. This makes it so I can always hear parts in the mix. Sometimes the final output can be a bit hot in different listening environments. I find that this setup lets me hear everything audibly with my hardware interface set to about half volume.
AFAIK, there are no keyboard shortcuts for the mixer, and no way to make bulk edits. I’d assume a mixer re-work is on the dev team’s list as they have to know how cumbersome all of that works currently. But for the meantime, there are possible workarounds.
Many thanks for this.
Thanks - good advice which has also saved me a lot of time!
