Linking up plugins outside of Cubase

I just bought Superior Drummer 3 which is excellent. The stand alone plugin allows midi editing, short cut keys, easy windows resizing and all that good stuff. It also plays nice when dragging too and from cubase into its own editor.
what I would like to do is have Cubase communicate start/stop and transport controls so I could use Superior Drummer 3 stand alone while cubase is playing back all my guitar/bass etc parts.
Is this even possible for cubase to do? (surely it is) and should Superior Drummer allow me to do this what would I need to do inside Cubase to setup such a connection.

Set up the MIDI sync (or whatever protocol SD3 is capable to sync to) so SD 3 receives the relevant information.
