While I appreciate Dorico’s redoing layout automatically with good results, in the final and/or revision stages I’d like to preserve my carefully adjusted vertical spacing and/or system allocation. Even for horizontal spacing, although that’s less of an issue for me. Now I find myself re-doing these things; even using Copy Staff Spacing or unchecking Wait For Next System Break, it’s time-consuming to make the same fine adjustments over and over just because of an edit several pages away. Because Lock Layout and Reset Layout are all-or-nothing, they don’t help much here. So I’d respectfully request something like an icon of a closed padlock appearing with the system break and frame break signposts. Maybe to the left with up/down arrows for the vertical spacing, to the right with left/right for horizontal, and above for system allocation. Dorico should still re-do layout elsewhere around a locked system, but leave intact its boundaries and/or internal spacing when edits are made elsewhere. Color coding as with the spacing boxes would be good too, but color alone seems insufficient as a reminder. As with similar controls they could be visible or hidden along with other signposts and, in Engraver mode, be reset to default (unlocked) via click and delete. Maybe these ideas are already on the to-do list — or maybe even possible in settings I’m unaware of.
