I have a bass drum with double pedals. I would like it to sound like 2 bass drums where the left pedal is always a 2nd BD.
Can I set up the logical editor so that all strokes that are on a beat (eg 1,2,3,4,5) are moved to another midi note, and none that are on subdivisions (e & ah). If so, how?
Yes. Quite easily.
Not at Cubase to be more specific. Look at the LE Presets that come with Cubase. Several of them only do stuff on certain beats. I think one accents beats 1 & 3. That will show you how to select them. Then just transpose the selection in the bottom section of the LE.
I thought I saw a preset to work on the downbeat, but now after looking at each preset, I don’t even see that.
Here’s one. Notice how it uses a range around each Note so it will Select Notes that are not exactly on the beat.
I thought I was going to get it. I set up like that with smaller ranges, eg 450, 460: 930, 940, etc.
though I didn’t see the markers on or near each beat as in that picture.
But then I wondered how I am only going change the ones with pitch C1 to D#0. I didn’t see a way to add a 2nd parameter for the specific pitch., only to change any pitches that are on those positions. I wanted to take a picture, but the logical eidtor hides each time I open the snipping tool.
Just add another line in the top saying - AND the Note # is equal to whatever. Make sure to take care with the Parens to get the logic right.
While working on the top section I’d recommend changing the bottom from Transform to Select until you know the top is working correctly.
This is the part I don’t get. 1st line in type is equal to note. I can’t put anything in parameter 2, I have AND and then the position lines below.
But If I create another line, it puts velocity in the filter target, and I can’t change it. Pitch is not a choice. I would try main value, but, I can’t alter.
Also, I saved waht I entered so far as a preset to be modified when I got the whole thing right. but I wanted to try starting with a blank preset, and now this comes up automatically, instead of a blank.
I’m still stuck here. Am I really going to have to go through the whole project and move all bass drums that are on beats to the line for 2nd bass drum because I used 2 pedals on one drum instead of 2 separate drums? And likewise on every future song I play on. Seems like it would be ideal for logical editor, but I can’t see how to set it.
What exactly happens when you try to change it? A screenshot of your LE Preset might be useful.
LE disappears as soon as I try screen snip, so I used my phone to take a picture. So the 2nd line is just to show what choices are available and I don’t see note #. I have the positions OK, I think, but I don’t see the highlight beats in the graph as you have and the positions show more subdivisions than you have.
Yeah the UI could seriously use update just for clarity. Some of the items in the list are kind of like placeholders or variables where the actual item changes depending on the previous line. If you select Subtype in the context of a Note you’ll get Pitch.
The ranges in the one I posted are much larger than yours so they’re more visible.
That’s because Cubase has lost focus. If you are using Windows Snip & Sketch you can set it to wait a few seconds before the capture. Then use that time to select Cubase again.
Very good. I added (and) subtype, pitch = c1 after all the positions and in bottom, change to F1.
It changed only the notes on the downbeats. Is my phrasing wrong?
I don’t understand what you’re saying. Isn’t your goal to only change some of them based on position? Perhaps all your OR statements need to be enclosed in Parentheses?
Try this one:
It assume your BD notes are on C1. It will change any note that is on a beat (or up to 10 ticks behind it) to pitch F1.
As raino pointed out, “Pitch” will be the “Subtype” in the pop-up menu.
I see why the other beats didn’t work before, with those big numbers in the wrong place.
I had originally posted regarding a 5 beat song. But actually the song I am working on to change now starts in 11 /8 and then 5/4 with some other changing meters.
this did a good job of moving the C1s on beats to F1, but then as I was playing it back and trying to figure out how I foot pedalled what I was seeing, I realized that it transformed some other notes to the F1 also and so I had to revert back to the original as snare was missing - moved as well. I’m not sure what’s going on.
Before I highlighted the whole drum track. If I just select some measure or even just the C1, will LE work on only those?
Any ideas what is wrong still, anyone?
