Long tempo texts

Hi everyone - I am arranging a Mahler symphony for small orchestra and having trouble fitting some of his very long tempo indications on the score, and then having to do some very unattractive editing of the parts to make them fit there too. I don’t want to abbreviate them - is it possible to turn one one long line into two shorter ones, or does anyone have any other thoughts? I’ve attached an example.

Many thanks

David

A possible way is System Text applying a paragraph style which matches the tempo style.
System Text allows multiple lines.

Another benefit is that it’s pretty easy to enter the Screenshot 2026-07-01 at 11.23.30 sign in front of the text.

Now that Tempo indications are Paragraph Styles, you can paste multiple lines of text into the Tempo popover:

Why don’t you check the parts from the original edition and see how that publisher handled it?

Probably in various different ways depending on the layout. Maybe the long text is only in the score for the conductor, and the parts just show Frisches Zeitmass or something.

Yes, but then you force this formatting upon every layout. With System Text you can at least have different versions at the same position which you can then hide on a per-layout basis.

Thanks Hugo - the system text is perfect. Mahler includes the entire of each text in all of the parts! The publishers simply spread it across two staves if necessary.
