Loud Screeching Noise when disconnecting Audio Device

I’m using the newest Pre-Release of VSTLive (2.1.30) on a MacBook Pro M1 16GB. This issue also happened a few times before with older Releases of VSTLive.

Following issue:
When the “main” audio device being used with VSTLive disconnects from the Laptop (e.g. when I power off the Digital Mixer that I use as an audio interface BEFORE I close VSTLive), an unbearably loud screeching noise occurs via the Laptop speakers (or any speakers still connected to the internal audio card).

Sadly I don’t have a crash report, because VSTL didn’t crash, it just produced this noise until I closed it.

I know, this is an avoidable problem (if I always close VSTLive first, everything’s fine) but I really dread this happening during a show, e.g. when the mixer shuts down or power cycles for whatever reason…

Keep up the good work!

Experienced something like a day ago… but couldn’t reproduce. Do you think you can record this with mobile? Might help to the developers understand your experience.

No need, the problem is understood. But if the output simply vanishes, it is no longer processing and the hardware (!) repeats the last buffer it got.
If we knew that it happend, we could possibly do something about it…although because the device is “gone”, we cannot tell it to be quiet anymore.

You’re right, if I understand @Benjamin_Mueller correctly, the scream is happening on the Laptop speakers (“or any speakers still connected to the internal audio card”) - as some fallback from disconnected-external-audio-device.

Yes, exactly @fkalmus, thanks for clarifying. It’s not the disconnected device that’s causing the noise.
It’s VST Live producing the sound, and playing it back on the laptop speakers (or whatever audio device is still connected to the laptop)

Mute the laptop speakers?

If that happens again, could you pls tell us which mixer meters show the static?

I know the question is addressed to @Benjamin_Mueller , but for statistic info, when that happened me there were no signal on any channel/output. Just a continous scream on the onboard-speaker, and Reset Audio in VL stopped the screaming.

That’s why the question. If meters don’t show anything, either the sound does not come from VST Live, or the driver has not cleared the last buffer because of whatever reasons. Then, this is not related to Metronome but some other side actions we don’t know but would like to, so we can fix it (if we can at all).

Of course Reset Audio will clear all buffers in the driver itself, and VST Live.
