Love improvements in Dorico 6 - have a question about entering Korean characters for lyrics

I want to thank you for all of the great changes you made to Dorico 6. I’ve already appreciated some of them in my work… I especially love the fact that you can now use the arrow key to move a lyric or syllable to another note, since sometimes I miss click.
There is still one lyric issue I’m having since I typeset quite a few Korean hymns and characters. Since I don’t know the language, I am usually sent a text file with all of the characters in order. When I copy and use ctr+v to paste them on the notes, I am always having to backspace and reclick for the next syllable. I eventually get them all clicked in, but it’s much more cumbersome than using English characters. Is there something I’m missing? I was hoping that the Dorico 6 lyric improvement would fix this. I would greatly appreciate any feedback you can give me. Thank you Dorico team.

I don’t know Korean either, but I know there are several Korean Dorico users on this forum, like for example @prko. Maybe they can help you?

I am currently using the final version of Dorico 5 on macOS but have not yet purchased Dorico 6.

I have had no issues with Korean lyrics in Dorico 5 so far. On macOS, pasting a syllable using Cmd+V automatically moves to the next note, allowing me to paste the next syllable directly.

However, it is possible to copy multiple syllables and paste them sequentially on macOS:
이 가사를 모두 복사해서 붙여보세요.
(White space will appear as melisma.)
You copy all text, then just paste one syllable per pressing CTRL+V.

I am unsure how this behaves on Windows. On Windows, Dorico automatically pastes each syllable to the subsequent notes with a single press of Ctrl+V?

I encountered difficulties with Korean lyrics when using Dorico 3 and 4 on macOS, whereas I had no issues on Windows.

I hope this information proves helpful. Please do let me know if you require any further clarification.

I had the same problem with Dorico 5 on Windows… When I copied multiple symbols and used CTRL+V to paste them, it advances to the next note, but doesn’t paste the next symbol. I have to backspace, use CTRL+V again and then it pastes the next symbol. I’m wondering if there is a prefered text editor to be using for copying the syllables from.
Is it because I’m using Windows instead of MacOS?

I can repeatedly paste the next syllable without using backspace or left arrow.
I am uploading the copy-and-paste behaviour of Dorico 5 on macOS:
a demo video

At the moment, I cannot test Dorico 5 on Windows.

Until Dorico 4 (if I remember correctly), typing Korean lyrics on MacOS was very inconvenient, while typing Korean lyrics on Windows was very convenient. So I installed Dorico 3.x and Dorico 4 on my virtual window via Parallel Desktop.

With Dorico 5, typing Korean lyrics is comfortable on MacOS, so I did not install it on Windows.

The copy-and-paste behaviour may have changed, but I cannot compare it. As far as I remember, the copy and paste behaviour in Dorico 3.5 or 4 was better than in Dorico 5, but I do not remember the OS specific difference.

The best way is

  1. first, install the Dorico 6 demo and test it
  2. then, install Dorico 4 and test it
  3. then, install Dorico 3.5 and test it

If we can use Dorico 4 and Dorico 3.5 with the Dorico 5 licence, you can use the old Dorico for Korean input by copying and pasting.

@Linda_Missad

Hi there,

I just tested the copy-paste behaviour of Korean lyrics in Dorico 5 Pro on Windows 10.

It has the same behaviour as on MacOS that I showed in the demo video.

Thank you, Prko, for you video. I didn’t start with Dorico until Dorico 5 so I don’t have access to earlier versions (previously a Finale user).
Something interesting I noticed in your video was that it didn’t look like you had spaces between the characters that you pasted in consecutively. Is that correct? Hmm, I will have to test that idea because currently all of the characters I copy and paste into Dorico have spaces between them. So does that mean that Dorico recognizes each character as a separate syllable unlike English.
I wonder if that’s why I’m having an issue.

Currently, I do not have the access to use Dorico 6.

According to my test, when inputting Korean lyrics and English lyrics, there are some differences in interpreting the syllable.

  • Korean lyrics:
    1. lyric popover proceeds to next note per syllable when pressing cmd/ctr + v.
    2. minus (-) is used to make melisma (?) with underbar
    3. white space is used to make melisma (?) without underbar
  • English lyrics:
    1. lyric popover proceeds to next note per syllable when pressing cmd/ctr + v.
    2. white space is used to make melisma (?) without underbar
    3. The corresponding feature of the 3rd functionality in Korean language lyrics does not seem to exist when pressing cmd/ctr + v. However, the corresponding feature is possible by using the right arrow.
