Lower voice

Today has been my first day working with Dorico. I am an expert at notation. I’ve read all of Gardner Read’s books and have published on music notation. I also export my Finale files to vector files so I can edit them in vector programs to do things Finale cannot do.

First, getting my department to have a site license for Dorico has been a complete CF. There is no discount for purchasing multiple copies, trying to get it into the US, and dealing with my own IT has taken us months. WTF Steinberg! If you’re going to be an industry standard, all these things need to be streamlined. I had to change browsers to sign up for this forum because I licensed my Dorico with my department account.

I am trying to do something very simple. I just want to add a lower voice to a measure. Dorico keeps adding a voice above the first beat, then adding the same voice below the rest of the measure. I tried multiple things, read the help site, and watched YouTube videos. Please help.

Welcome to the forum @Dissonance7!

For now, select the first interval, right-click, and navigate to this menu:

If you see Up-stem Voice 1 and Up-stem Voice 2 in the final menu as per my image, then this is your problem.

After Up-stem Voice 1, the next voice you create should be Down-stem Voice 1 (unless for a specific reason you need two up-stem voices). It appears as if you have jumped to the next up-stem voice inadvertently.

Select the notes and go to the same menu but click New Down-stem Voice. Does that fix it?

PS you might want to change the Steinberg-licensing tag that is attached to this thread, since it has nothing to do with it.

It sounds like you work at a school – are these pages applicable to you?

Welcome to the forum.

You may also find it easier to navigate through voices if you turn on the Voice colours in the View menu.

You can also see which voice a given note is, in the very bottom of the window.

Thank you. We are aware of these pages but still ran into unexpected problems. We have the site license working now.

I didn’t intentionally add the tag. Maybe it was automatic. How do I remove it?

Thank you for your comments and the warm welcome. This looks like a great community.

I used Finale since the early 90s so I don’t remember overcoming its challenges. My students tell me that the learning curve on Dorico is less than it is on Finale. I’m finding Dorico a challenge, but am enjoying it.
