Lyric collision

May ask what parameters? I can only think of Note Spacing.

Tighter or condensed fonts, wouldn’t they allow for even more space between syllables?

Yes, the Engraving Options for lyrics are a bit loose. I’ve always found it a bit odd that hyphens are given more room than spaces.

Engraving Options > Lyrics has settings for how much space should be left between syllables and for hyphens.

No. Condensed fonts take up less horizontal space, meaning that the presence of lyrics using them will affect note spacing (and distortion) to a lesser degree.

Yes, thank you, I thought note spacing was not affected. I used a tighter value and the score looks much better!

I realize that Dorico has many options for lyric spacing. I’ve tried them all, and nothing has helped the bar in this screenshot. (BTW this is Arial Narrow Bold 11—with the default Academico 11 regular, the problem is worse.) I have no casting off options checked, and the system is 84.9 % full. I tried changing the spacing with regard to hyphens, neighboring syllables, “Make Space For Lyrics” is checked, etc.

Anything else to try? And/or, I feel like Dorico, which does so much automatically, ought to have an “avoid lyric collisions” function as a failsafe. Any chance that might happen?

Thanks,
Peter

Can you show us the entire line of music rather than just one measure?

Posting that section of the Dorico file would be even more helpful.

Can’t post the file but here’s the whole system (this is a bare lead sheet—no other parts but the voice). Thanks!

What’s the percentage fullness of the system? If you’ve locked the system with Breaks, then Dorico can’t make it any better.

Academico is not economical of space, I’ll grant you: but a Bold Condensed Sans face will lose in legibility whatever it makes up for in economy.

Good point about bold sans fonts. No locked systems, system fullness is 84.9%.

Just double check that lyric spacing is on in Layout Options > Note Spacing?

Ultimately, you can either try moving the note spacing positions in Engrave mode, to see if you can give more space to the 3/4 bar than the 4/4 bar; or you can add a System Break to split the system.

There must be something else going on. I’ve not seen this behaviour from Dorico without there having been some user intervention somewhere. In any case, I would definitely reduce the space between lyric syllables and hyphens. Too bad you can’t share the file. How about if you extract just that one system and post it here?
