Hi all!
I am trying to understand how this works.
Minimum distance from other items set to 1/8 spaces:
So here, the 1/8 space would be between the ”l” and the a? (Or between the ”K” and the a)
But what about this – an accent added. Where is the 1/8 distance now?
How are the distances actually calculated?
Minimum distance from staff is set to 1/2 sp.

Your image suggests that the distance is between the letter’s bounding box rather than measurement depending on a letter’s ascender or descender.

A quick Test with this:
… shows that if I change that e to an uppercase K, the line doesn’t move.
So I suggest that the distance is from the object to the top of the text’s bounding block. Hence the use of the word “minimum”.
(Accents are often always placed above the staff in vocal writing, to avoid exactly this sort of conundrum!)

Thanks to both of you, that is probably the case.
@benwiggy didn’t think of that, but that certainly makes sense! Outside the staff, above? But no dedicated setting for this on vocal staves, right?
There’s no dedicated Engraving Option to have articulations fixed above the staff only vocal staves, but not on other staves, no.
