I don’t have a lot of experience with lyrics yet in Dorico so there are multiple issues with lyrics in the piece for Concert Band in Dorico Pro. First, some lyrics are appearing above the part (ie. flute, Clarinet 2,3, etc. in Page View. I need all lyrics below each staff.
Also, rests are appearing in Page View in the parts that have been condensed even though I went into Galley View and hid the rests in the edit menu. The piece look fine until I get to these lyrics and then the spacing and other items goes wonky.
Any help appreciated. I can send a redacted version of the Dorico file if that helps. I need to get this page and the following page looking much better, if possible.
Here is a greatly redacted score. As you can see, everything looks pretty normal except pages 14 and 15 where the lyrics appear. The spacing gets bad, rests are appearing in some condensed parts, and lyrics are not consistently below the appropriate staff.
I hope this helps with figuring out how to straighten this mess out.
Yes, I knew those two pages where too full but if I reduce the rastral size in those two pages only, I feel the Percussion parts at the bottom will be significantly smaller than the rest of the piece. I can move to 9X12 Concert size pages and I am sure that will help some.
I deleted the notes and lyrics in Flute 2, Clar. 2&3, Trumpet 2&3, French Horn 1&2 and Trombone 2&3 in Galley View so that I would not get double notes like you see in the Alto Sax part in the condensed page view. There is probably a better way to handle this.
I went to 9X12 Concert size and that did help but page 14 is still at 114% probably because the lyrics appearing sometimes below the staff and sometimes above are creating a problem.
By using condensing rather than double notes in some staves and other empty staves, it works better. I had to do some manual condensing, so you’ll need to check afterwards if you need to do any condensing resets. I reduced the rastral size and the frame margins to get below 100%***.
The condensing change does not seem to help. It does put all the stems in the same direction but all the notes are doubled in the condensed staves. (See Alto Sax part)
This look so much better. It seems you eliminated the rests by separating the two notes in the condensed parts. This will mean that the first Flutes will see only the top notes in their part and the second flutes will see only the lower notes in their part. The idea here is that both notes would appear in all parts because the women are to sing the upper notes and the men are to sing the lower notes so it would be helpful for all parts to show both notes. Is there a way to do that?
First idea which comes to my mind would be to have 2 instruments in the parts (for example, add Flute 2 to Flute 1 part), and to play around with staff visibility, condensing and system breaks.
That looks right, but I am not sure how exactly you did that or how to get that same effect into the second part. Let’s see if anyone else has any ideas. I know this is a tough one.
