MAC: Backups, Rollbacks, Redundant operation etc

Hi at all and especially to @Spork and the other developers here.

I have two questions regarding the safe operation of a mac with VST Live 2. I´m not a software developer and don’t have deep knowledge about.

Pre-Releases:
I like the pre-releases because they often contain very useful and long-awaited features and bug fixes in the current development phase of VST live. I don’t update VST Live 2 before shows because I will avoid bugs/problems during the show. But what can I do if a pre-release is buggy? Can I install the previous version parallel or do I have to “overwrite” the actual version with an old? Is it possible to open my project with the previous version?

Backups:
Actually I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my Mac. But is it the right way? If a pre-release version is buggy or something else in my opinion I can’t restore to a previous version. That is only possible with seperate full backups. Am i right?

How do the other VST Live 2 users do their backup here in the community?

Redundant operation audio
I´m not happy with a single laptop on stage and want avoid to take care of a second system with another app/software (stagetraxx or anything else). Actually I know two solutions for redundant playback. Radial SW-8-USB or iConnectivity Playaudio12. Are this to products working with VST live on two different laptops? How to start the two VST Live apps at the same time?

Redundant operation midi
How does it work with midi? We use midi to trigger Daslight 5 to control our lightshow. Can this also be handeld with the two devices i mentioned above?

Hardware for redundant operation
I´m looking for an easy system which ideally can be rack mounted. Actually I use a MacbookPro with a Thunderbolt docking station which is rack mounted. Any recommendations for dual operation? I think about two MacMini. But which display(s)? Are there affordable displays which can be mounted in racks?

Thank you at all for your help

You can install any version, but if it is older, you need to first uninstall the current one.
We were able to load current projects in version 1.0  But of course features are missing then, but it should be safe to load newer projects with older versions as long as those are not “too far away”. So if you encounter problems with a new prerelease version, it should always be safe to revert to the previous one. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that to work, but so far it always has.

Not quite sure how to respond, but given the above it should be ok.

There were some reports about that, maybe search the forum. If you load the same project to 2 machines, swapping should be really quick.

Yes, we discussed an idea to send MIDI-CCs from master computers to backup for START, STOP, NEXT(/prev) SONG. Then iConnectivity has a sinus-wave hartbeat detection, need to load that generator plugin to a global-layer.

Also @kraimor I’m fan of CCC, but for daily backup prefer timemachine much better… and saved my *utt a few times.
My process is save-archive my working project to my cloud, also versioning my project - currently - month to month.

About rollback. I leave “good older” ones’s installers on my machine. If experiencing serious probl, can quickly UNINSTALL current/INSALL another

You can copy the executable to a new file in the application folder and rename it to something suitable. Run it from there or add a link on the desktop. Upgrades won’t affect it so it is possible to keep several versions.
