Macintosh Update

Not sure this is the appropriate place to ask this. I still have a number of Finale files that I need to switch over to Dorico. What is the final word on whether I can update my Mac OS from Sonoma to Tahoe and still be able to work the Finale files when needed?

Thanks to any Finale refugees that know the answer.

There are many reports of Tahoe really messing up Finale - buttons not working, smart shapes doing weird things, playback errors, and more…

I am holding off on the Tahoe update as long as possible - Finale works fine on either Sonoma or Sequoia with my M3 MacBook Pro. No issues at all for me.

The Finale blogs have a few posts about the Tahoe upgrade -

There is also some development on a third-party fix for Tahoe that is still in Beta testing. No release date has been announced, however. Below is a quote from a Google search:

Jan AngermĂĽller (Elbsound Studio) has developed a tool to fix the following issues caused by macOS Tahoe:

  • Non-responsive buttons: Play, stop, and settings buttons (apply, cancel, OK) in preferences not responding to mouse clicks.

  • Playback control failures: Inability to stop playback via mouse.

  • Graphics issues: Misconfigured UI elements, such as the selection tool appearing as a large orange box in some cases.

I have a followup question. Do you know if it is safe for me to update from Somoma to Sequoia?

With regard to “Does Finale work in Sequoia”? Yes, it does.

And with regard to your initial question there are at least three options:

  1. Just XML export does work in Tahoe.
  2. Switch over the number of files to Dorico and upgrade afterwards.
  3. Partition your HD/SSD and keep a small partition with Sonoma to be able to run Finale reliably.

As Vadian wrote, XML export works in Tahoe, so export everything as XML and PDF so you don’t have to worry down the road.

Thanks to all for your thoughtful responses. I think I’ve got this.
