I have a project where both trumpet players hold both an E trumpet and a C trumpet, and Dorico counts them as four trumpets:
[Fig. 1]
Which is not ideal, because I’d like Dorico to count by players. I can force that by having Dorico display player and not instrument names on the trumpet staves, but that will make it seemingly impossible to format it as “Trumpet” and then “1” and “2” stack on top of each other to its right:
[Fig. 2]
which is again, not ideal.
I can also change the settings so that different keyed instruments are counted separately, and thus creating Trumpet in E 1, Trumpet in C 1, Trumpet in E 2 and Trumpet in C 2, but that will affect my four horns, whom I want to be counted as 1 - 4:
[Fig. 3]
Is there a way to have Dorico count by the player and not by the instrument, when one player is holding multiple equivalent instruments but in different keys?
However, the dialog for renaming a player does not support text formatting like the dialog for renaming an instrument does, so I won’t be able to have “1” and “2” stacked on top of each other to the right.
I am aware of this functionality, however, I have to have it set to “count instruments of different transposition together” since I need the 4 horns (of two different keys) be counted as 1-4.
That being said, someone suggested a workaround privately to me, so if there isn’t a native way to do this (i.e., natively have a functionality of counting by the player and not the instrument, thus allowing four horn players be counted as 1-4 and trumpet player being counted as 1-2 each holding two trumpets), I might just have to resort to that instead.
It seems like that’s not currently possible, although I think this might be a reasonable feature to request in the future versions of Dorico.
Yes, of course you can name your trumpets"Trumpet (E) 1" and “Trumpet (E) 2”, then Dorico will not add any additional numbers. Just easy
Be reminded though, that Dorico will condense only a player’s first instrument, not their second or third instrument. So in your setup, the trumpets in E will condense, the trumpets in C will not.
The current workaround suggested to me is having the two C trumpets be selected for the two trumpet players as two C cornets, then renaming them to “ Trumpet (C)” (with a space in the beginning to prevent it being counted with the E Trumpets”. This will mean when condensed, it still shows something along the lines of “Trumpet 1 2” with “1” and “2” stacked on top of one another.
