Manual extender lines

It’s standard practice in barbershop notation, and some other vocal styles, to show a lyric extender instances where multiple voices share a lyric, but not all have moving notes, like this spot. Dorico doesn’t seem to offer that option. The lyrics here would be attached to the down stem voice on the upper staff.

In cases like this, I’ve found it helpful to place the lyric in whichever voice makes the most sense for the required extension. (Someone else may have a better solution—I’m curious!)

Typically in this genre, verses 1-4 are in use, for the occasional lyrics that apply only to a particular voice. That means that the placement of the different voices won’t be in alignment with one another, making your solution impractical. The manual says that extender lines have handles visible in engrave mode, but I’m not seeing them in most cases. I’d be satisfied making manual adjustments if I could.

I’m not sure I understand this. Can you show an example of this problem?

If putting the lyrics into another voice won’t help, then you’ll have to:

  1. Split the long note by pressing U with the caret halfway through the note.
  2. Select the lyric and press Enter, to activate the popover.
  3. Press space to move to the second note.
  4. Select the first note, and press the note duration for the whole thing.

The example I posted is typical. I wanted the extender line under the whole note, to the end of the last moving part. Your solution worked beautifully. I didn’t know that U would split a single note; I thought it was only for untie. Thank you!

In which case, I can’t see the problem with putting the lyric into the upper voice. Then you’ll be able to space through the other two notes.

I have to keep the upper voice reserved for other places when it has additional lyrics. I’m trying to keep logical consistency with each of the 4 voices having their own place. 2 & 3 go above the staff, 1 & 4 below.
