Manual note spacing completely changes when inserting an extra bar

I created a new orchestral part that was created independently and not extracted from a full score. I accidentally left out a bar of rest and when I insert the missing bar all of my manual note spacing in the subsequent music completely changes. I have tried to insert the bar of rest while in Insert mode and the same problem occurs. The bar I am trying to insert is on page 10 of a 46 page part, so readjusting the subsequent 36 pages of manual spacing would create many additional hours of work. Is there a way to insert this missing bar without disturbing the subsequent manual note spacing? HELP!!

It’s hard to help without seeing the document, or at least a screenshot of the relevant passage in Engrave mode, so we can see Page Breaks, system fullness, etc.

Are you sure you need to do that much manual adjustment? Are you sure there are no global options to cover these changes?

This is why I always beg people not to use any manual Engrave mode until you really master Dorico and know why you’re using it (which should be extremely rare occasions).

Use note spacing changes (Engrave menu) instead, very stable and reliable.

As you will see below, the spacing is totally changed after I add an extra measure 3 after rehearsal 110. FYI, I never do manually adjusting until the very last stage. Unfortunately, even after proofing several times, I might have accidentally left out a measure of rest. I’m only human and make mistakes sometimes! Also, this is not about “mastering” Dorico. As you can see, this is hardly amateur work. I have engraved countless parts all of which are housed at the Metropolitan Opera where I am a clarinetist and I am sought out or hired by many opera houses to purchase my parts. This seems to be a Dorico specific issue and really is a problem. When I create my parts, I need to make many adjustments to note spacing because Dorico’s automatic spacing just doesn’t cut it. When you are dealing with cues and page turns for huge parts like this R. Strauss opera, you need to be able to space things correctly so they look visually correct. Dorico just can’t do that on it’s own if you want it to look esthetically correct. While I LOVE the Dorico program, the issue I’m having will cause me to spend an enormous amount of extra time readjusting the manual spacing I created in the subsequent 36 pages of music.

P.S. You may look at the “AFTER” screenshot and think it’s not that bad. However, you will see that the G.P. is not centered, and that there are several spacing adjustments that I made that are now altered. Multiply that by 36 more pages and that is a world of headache. This means I have to go through the entire remainder of the document to search for things that are altered and not lined up correctly. It’s not just about note spacing, sometimes I’m adjusting the measure widths and that alters where the text is lined up which is a problem.

This probably happen because the bar structure changes. Maybe you could work with two files, and combine the two pdfs after the edit? You would have to create a bar number change starting with the following page (if you use bar numbers, maybe you only have rehearsal marks).

LAE, yes, that is certainly an option. I did also consider splitting the flow at page 11 which would eliminate the unwanted changes. I was just trying to see if there was an option to avoid doing this, because that creates such a cumbersome process. Ugh…

Did you try adding the extra beats using an insert stop position, increasing the number of beats in the bar before the red line? Maybe that could help, if that somehow would avoid the bar numbering to change. Then you could add a barline in the now longer bar. Hope that makes sense.

The stop position did not help :frowning:

The only thing I can see that has changed are the G.P. markings. How have you added these? Shift+x or playing technique? How have you adjusted them to be centered? Asking because I am trying to recreate your example.

The stop position together with

adds extra beats to the bar, and then you can add a barline in the middle of that bar, nothing after the stop line changed.

However, when I try to experiment with what you did, I have no problems of anything changing after the page break. I tried it with a manual note spacing change and with a text item moved in engrave mode. They all stayed put after me adding the bar.

Can you post a part of the file that exhibits the problem? Or can you describe more in detail what happens? All in order to let us help you.
