Manual rest: how do I center it in the measure?

Hi,
I’m trying to replicate the dummy rest that occurs when no notes are inserted within a measure. How do I create one manually and have it centered in the measure?

Open the Bars popover with Shift+B, type rest, and hit Enter.

Why create one manually? Surely if you just delete the manual rest, you’ll automatically get a whole bar rest?

Thanks for your reply, but the rest isn’t displayed because, to hide all measures, I selected the option that hides rests within measures. This was requested by the composer, who, every few measures, wants the central rests to be clearly visible again, as if they were standard rests.

Well, you can get it with some fiddling.

  1. Enter a note in the measure
  2. Select the rests in that measure and do Edit > Remove Rests
  3. Switch to a second voice
  4. Shift+B, rest, Enter
  5. In Engrave mode, hide the notehead and stem
  6. In Engrave mode, set the Rest Position of the bar rest appropriately

Once you have one of these measures, you can copy/paste or Alt/Opt+click it elsewhere as needed.

I would choose the option to show rests. Then, at the end of the process, select the rests to remove.
