Manually changing voices in percussion kit dysfunctional

I have a large percussion kit, and in general I need every instrument to be on the same voice. However, sometimes I need several voices simultaneously. The feature accessible through Percussion > Change Voice > (…) is behaving very strangely for me and not making the desired results possible.

If I start with this bar:

and do, for instance, Percussion > Change Voice > Extra Down Stem Voice, then the result becomes:

I think you’re better off if you add a note in a different instrument, then change the voice on that. (and, yes, it’s pretty dysfunctional for some things)

Thanks Jesper, that helps a little. What I find then is that I can’t even change the note value of the new note! Some people have suggested switching to and from single-line notation, with which I’ve had limited success, and also found that it deletes all my slurs between instruments.

Yes, you have to switch temporarily to single-line instruments under Library->Layout Options->Players->Percussion. At least, that’s what I did. Yes, slurs get deleted here too.
