Mapping a Midi Remote to a Midi Device Panel? Nothing happens

I’m working with some vintage hardware synths where I’ve installed some Midi Devices with panels. From these, using my mouse, I am able to manipulate and hear parameters change in real time (such as filter cutoff).

When I right-click on any of the parameters, it gives me the option to map it to a midi remote:

It brings up the mapping assistant window, where I then wiggle a knob on my midi controller and I see it appear on the left side, along with the midi device parameter listed on the right (under cubase function):

I then click “Apply Mapping” and close the window. After this, nothing happens, the parameter does not respond as I turn the knob. I can definitely see the knob turning in the bottom midi remote editor window, and virtual libraries will respond to it. But I can’t seem to get any of my Midi Devices to respond. Weirdly enough, if I turn the device panel parameter using my mouse, I can see the midi remote control knob turn in sync. So there’s a connection there, but it appears to be going in one direction. What am I doing wrong?

I fought with the MIDI remote feature for a while and finally gave up. I’m frustrated at times thinking I should be able to assign a MIDI controller directly to a knob or button (I was able to do that in previous Cubase versions) but now it requires that I build a controller. My hardware controller sends MIDI controller info … Cubase sees it … please send it directly to the knob I selected. But, no… build a controller to send it through a Quick Control before my knob will work. Aaauugh!!!
Sorry… I’m no help. Just ranting!!!
