Finally started using Dorico after much convincing, and I’m having trouble trying to get the sounds and notation to remotely work. I’ve tried changing playback templates and other things in the play mode, but nothing works. Snare sounds like a rope drum, tenors sound like claves, and bass drums just sound like a concert bass drum. And now it only lets me write rim shots for tenor drums.
Hi,
Are you using sample libraries from Dorico or from a third party like Virtual Drumline?
Just the libraries from Dorico.
got it. Are you looking to write music for drumline instruments? If so, if you’re looking for realistic playback sounds , I would recommend using a third party like Virtual Drumline here:
To make VDL work in Dorico, you’d have to program it which would take a considerable amount of time. Instead of that, you can buy a template that does all of the work for you from Score Sauce here:
The marching drums included in Dorico 6 are actually coming from that VDL library. Of course, for somebody wanting to work with those sounds a lot, it could be a good investment. For the moment, I suggest we try and help @amanii with the problem they’re having.
Testing marching drums.dorico (1,5 Mo)
Here’s a little project that demonstrates some marching snare sounds.
That’s a great point! I remember Dorico had some VDL sounds in the past but was not sure if they still did and which ones, thanks for following up.
Apologies for the late response.
I can here these perfectly fine. Is there a way I can get them to work like that? Also can I use the score sauce template without Tapspace VDL?
The sauce template is specifically built for the VDL tapspace library, it would not work on any other library.
I really have not done anything specific to create that file: the playback template is Auto, the instruments chosen are Marching tenors (not 1 line versions), Marching Cymbals, Marching Bass Drums. That’s it. And I find it’s working as expected. Let me know if you have problems setting that up, I’ll send some screen captures if needed.
So I added the preset from the Halion Sonic instruments from the file you sent into my score, and it seems only the snare has sound, but it’s skipping and missing notes, articulation, etc.
And I think the screen captures would help if you wouldn’t mind.
I figured out what the problem was. The Halion Sonic output didn’t match the channel output from Dorico.
Thank you for your assistance while I try Dorico out for the first time. ![]()
This should not happen when you use the playback template route… That is why I highly recommend it!
