Marching Percussion questions

Former Finale user with marching percussion questions.

  1. In the setup mode we have a marching snare, tenor, bass drums players but the sounds aren’t there? Is this accurate? Why no sounds?
  2. Finale had basic (and I mean basic) sounds for marching percussion. Is there a way to “move” those sounds into Dorico? and use them?
  3. If you can’t use the sounds from finale, is there a usable alternative other than VDL?

This should lead to more questions so Thanks in advance.

  1. That’s correct: at the moment, Dorico itself does not include any marching percussion sounds. This is something we hope to remedy in a future version. In theory it should be possible to use the marching percussion sounds included with Finale in Dorico, though in practice I’m not sure whether anybody had yet created any percussion maps for those sounds.

  2. Yes, as I wrote above, you can load the ARIA Player in Dorico, then load the marching percussion sounds into ARIA Player, and use them in Dorico – but you would need a percussion map so that Dorico can know which sounds are to be found on which keys.

  3. I think VDL is still considered the best available marching percussion library. There are a couple of others (e.g. Rumble and Fanfare) but I believe VDL is still the most comprehensive such library.

Thanks for the info and this is encouraging news.
