Marching Percussion Setup (HAlion) - NEW

Hi! I’m struggling with inputting snare drum and bass drum parts for my marching band arrangement in Dorico. In the playback, the notes sound like rolls instead of single hits, even though they look correct in the score. I’ve attached a video to show the issue. Am I missing something in the setup or input process? Any advice on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

HI @ricardostevens, in your video is not very clear what you choose. It would be clearer if you select the track itself, so that the channel strip shows what that channel has loaded (including Expression and Percussion maps). Anyway it seems that you don’t have a Percussion Map loaded (but again: you are selecting the Flute track!).

To make sure the correct percussion map is loaded for the Bass Drums, reapply the Auto Playback Template (from menu Play>Playback template).

If this doesn’t help, please upload the Dorico Project here, to have a look.

Ok, confirmed: as suspected, you don’t have a percussion map assigned for the Bass Drums Track:

Reapplying the Auto Playback template, as I suggested in my previous Post, resolves this:

How do i select

Marching Band Percussion. I don’t See it.

@ricardostevens, please read carefully my previous posts:

Go, from Play mode in Menu Play, then choose Playback template…, select Auto and then click on Apply and Close.

Here the manual:

And here a very useful Playlist all about Playback in Dorico.

Hi @ricardostevens, as you gave the solution checkmark, I imagine you are all set now.

Anyway it is strange that in you Percussion maps list (in post #5) there are no Marching Percussion PMs:
be sure you have all the components installed from the Steinberg Download Manager/Dorico/Dorico6 or check in the App Steinberg Library Manager if all components are installed (not sure if this is enough to check or is pertinent):

Thank you so much. One more question. Can I use NotePerformer with HALion? Looks like it switched over to HALion when I changed template now NotePerformer is not working. Thank you!

@ricardostevens
Yes, you can combine different existing Playback Templates and configure them by positioning them in the Entries list and adding Families and/or Instruments Overrides (this is to tell the resulting combine PT, which configuration to assign to the various instruments). Here a visual guide:

All the informations needed to understand this procedure can be found in this Video Tutorials Series by the amazing Anthony Hughes @Anthony_at_Steinberg (playlist with with 11 videos):
