Is there a place in the ‘Edit Instruments’ dialog that specifies whether or not a second stave shows the rests in that stave? I’ve got a Marimba part (in a large percussion ensemble and piano piece) that consistently hides the whole rests in the upper stave.
(Incidentally, in the same score the vibraphone also doesn’t show whole rests in empty bars, but the xylophone shows them in its single stave):
There is no such setting AFAIK. A normal marimba should definitely be showing rests in both staves, just like any other grand staff instrument. Look for the first note in the treble staff and select it; does it by any chance have the Starts voice property activated? Same for the Vibraphone. Although I’m not sure what you mean by consistently—does it happen throughout the entire flow and/or project?
As to how that might happen, maybe you copied those notes out of a staff where that property made sense?Or there’s been some funky MusicXML importing business.
Aha! It was the ‘starts voice’ property. I must have inadvertently put that in at both the first entrance of the Marimba upper stave voice and the xylophone. This was my first big project using Dorico and I was probably adding second voices all over the place because I didn’t know any better…yet.
Thanks for solving the mystery. Yes, btw, it was just in this case. Should have checked that but didn’t think to look there.
