Maybe I just don’t know where to look or how to search, but if I search for “Markers” in Pref/Keyboard Shortcuts, I only find how to get to a previously entered marker, not how to enter a new one with keyboard shortcut. That seems like an obvious oversight.

… yes, as Carvin Man says, the Insert key is the key you’re looking for. You can reassign to any other key in File/Key Commands.
