MASSIVE SSD spikes: Cubase 15 drum machine, GA6, NOW Halion 7

Here is a quick video demonstrating the spikes. The built in drum machine is the worst with massive lag while switching pads with a mouse. Sequencing or triggering with pads, seems to play fine on both with minimal spikes. At first I thought it was just a graphic loading issue, but as you can see from the massive SSD spikes on my audio drive, it’s reloading or streaming the sample every time the pad is pressed with the mouse on GA6 and the drum machine.

For comparison, I demonstrate Battery 4, Battalion, and Atlas. I can literally spam a ton of samples on Atlas and it barely spikes. but most important is when a kit is loaded, ITS LOADED and no drive activity at all.

Whats going on here? Drum machine is barely usable now esp when trying to create a pattern…its constantly hanging between switching pads. GA6 no matter which settings, RAM or disk is still usable, as long as I am not clicking around too much.

All my samples and libraries are on the same drive.

Sorry about the video being a little glitchy, but you can still tell whats going on.

Yes problem here. It is worse the longer the samples are.

It also affects when clicking from preview button in Pattern Editor.

At one point the lag was so bad it was pretty much impossible to use mouse to come up with a groove.

Just messing with the drum machine again…trying to find some inspiration with some drum samples. Probably not a good idea with the state this device is in. But I was pleasantly surprised when I dropped some samples in from a random loopmasters folder…a kick snare and clap, and it seems to work fine…no hiccups or massive spikes when switching samples. So I dropped a few more in to create a kit to see what I could come up with. Well I made the huge mistake of dropping a longer loop into replace my kick because I just wanted to chop up the just the kick from the loop. At that point it was done. Took at least 10 seconds for the loop display to catch up with the sample, and thats when the SSD spikes started slowing the whole device down.

I need to not use this thing thinking its a quick drum sampler or sequencer. This definitely needs some TLC.

It’s now also happening in Halion 7. It just brings Cubase and Halion to its knees and clicking to trigger any sample or UI change becomes a sluggish nightmare:

Wow this looks more severe on your system. For me it seems to start out ok, and with small projects, too. But then something start’s triggering it and it becomes a mess. I noticed this with both Win10/WIn11 machines here, both with SSD.

Exactly. Its not always right away and can behave for short moments.

not sure if this is a solution or not, but ive tried various preload times In expert options mode. At times it seems 3 seconds works and it plays smooth for little bit, but then goes back to sluggish.

It does not matter if its a factory preset or my own custom presets/samples. Standalone or vst plugin.

I see it was reported last year already Drum Machine extremely laggy when triggered with mouse - #2 by jules4117

I also get this with no playback of samples or anything.

@steinberg can someone comment on this?

thanks

Yeah, that is one of the worst culprits…just trying to adjust start, stop, and fades of samples. And this goes farther than just the drum machine as you can tell. I am still debating on changing this over to Halion or Groove Agent as the issue, but you cant select all. I just left it Cubase since the drum machine is worse case right now.

My bet is Halion, GA, and the drum machine all share similar coding when it comes to their sample engine. I just hope it get fixed sooner than later.

Thanks for sharing!
