I imported a .xml file from Finale and I can’t figure out what’s going on with these measures of rest? Why do they compress like that (at reh B, D, G, and J/K)? I don’t have a fixed number of bars per system, although I did at the start and reset my layout options to Factory. That was causing a somewhat similar issue.
Select the last note or rest before where it happens and untick ends voice in the lower properties panel. And/Or select the first note or rest after where it happens and untick the starts voice property.

If you have this set under preferences, you can select all, and untick both starts voice and ends voice.
Hey, that worked! Thank you so much. The .xml stuff is always pretty wonky, but I did your ‘show all properties trick’ for all notes and rests, unticked the starts voice and ends voice, and voila.
What is the purpose of “Starts Voice” and “Ends Voice” anyway? What did I lose by doing that?
When you have multiple voices, you might want to hide/remove the rests for one of the voices. When you use Edit->Remove rests, it sets to two properties.
