Mental barriers to making music

Its not about the recording its about the music. So don’t record anything for weeks just play write and forget some great songs and riffs, so much so that you’ll be hanging to get them down. Just out of interest.I have three/four plugs to turn on put the kettle on have n5 set to load withe fresh template, all is good by the time the tea is ready then it is pure inspiration. I just haven’t been made a multiple million air yet. Just chill it’s ok to feel where caught up in a net (we are) it’s just a net of our choosing. Music first recording second, and post some stuff for us to hear.

Guys thanks. This thread has made me think. There is also the challenge of going from 9-5 businessman to wannabe songwriter . It’s a huge shift to get out of one mindset and into the other. I have often thought I should just walk away from the job and give music my life for 5 years and see where it leaves me. Yes it would be risky. Yes my future social security would be lower and my retirement would probably be a lot lower . But at least I could say I tried. Otherwise it could be all regrets

burning yourself up trying to do both?

either give up music or give up the 9-5 businessman treadmill.

better to try and fail than to never try at all

Look at the Bieb & other little snots who’ve made it to the big time at age…what 10? If you’re older than that, you’ve passed your prime in the music business

Seriously, as a father at age 23, I didn’t have the luxury of abandoning my day job myself. By 30 or so, I realized wasn’t getting anywhere, so I stopped. Though it was fun, I simply couldn’t afford my music hobby of performing…no regrets. I’m ok doing music for my own enjoyment when I can…though not near as much as I’d like…priorities. My point, don’t let not making something of yourself musically, if that never happens get in the way of just enjoying the act of making music. By all means, give it a shot, but don’t base your entire life on only being a success if that happens… as there’s much more to life’s successes and happiness.

I remember working at a church, when I asked Father Thomas Relihan about Catholic priests, if they can marry and have families these days. He was pretty old, and in his time he had to give his life to the lord. He simply said …“You see, at my age it doesn’t matter anymore” So, at some point you’ll also be so old too, you won’t care about music either

I found the answer in your signature: “What worries you masters you”!

There is no “mental barrier” that is preventing you from accomplishing anything, but because you “worry” about it, you create it and allow it to “master” you. The more you worry about that “mental barrier”, the taller and wider it gets! Believe that there’s nothing keeping you from doing what you REALLY want to do, and then do it! But do you REALLY want to? Well, that make-believe mental barrier you use as an excuse suggests otherwise!

I’ve recently done some of the above, getting out and playing with live musicians. Its refreshing, enjoyable. When I get back to my studio, I feel more motivated to do things differently also.

I recommend this to anyone who is a solo composer… it does seem to help.

Maybe you have an hidden depression?
Otherwise if you do a 9-5 business and than make music, i think it´s not a good way, cause youré thoughts are not cleared. What about the Weekend? Calm yourself down listen to music and let inspire you.
If the tech things f**** up your mind then create a template and thats it.
