Metronome mark not showing the note

I typed in shift+B, then typed in the desired tempo (BPM) number, but only the number showed up. How do I get it to show a quarter note followed by the equal sign, and then the BPM?

Use Shift-T for tempo, write q = 120 or whatever BPM you want.

Yes - ha ha - I meant to write that I had typed shift+T, not shift+B, so chalk that mistake up to an old guy not reading his message before sending. Meanwhile, thanks to Jesper for showing me that q=quarter note.
