Is it possible to use microtones in the Cubase Pro 14 Score Editor, such as are used in Arabic, Turkish and other Middle Eastern musics? In practice, these tones are of variable pitch, but for scoring purposes fixed pitch would be fine. By microtones I mean the conventional half flat and half sharp symbols used to score this music.
Thanks for prompt reply, pity, Dorico is rather beyond my current needs in a scoring program, perhaps I should lobby for it to be included in Cubase, though I imagine I might have to wait a while!
Thanks for your reply, yes I realise it’s not simple to implement microtones in Scoring editors, but as I said Dorico is more than I need for scoring right now (and beyond my budget! I’ve just upgraded from Cubase 11 to 14 Pro, with the 40% discount, and that’s all I can spend at the moment). I understand Dorico’s scoring engine is being integrated into Cubase, I guess I will just have to cross my fingers and hope this facility will come across eventually……I probably shouldn’t hold my breath…
Anyway, thanks again for your reply, the video was interesting, though only in theory for now,
I think even the free Dorico SE has support for microtones. The Dorico product range supports multiple visual representations and playback is possible through several different methods:
VST Note Expression: every note has a high resolution pitch, and even chords with individual tuning on each note can be played back. Supported by HALion Sonic and all preset content
VST2 detune: old method used by some plugins
pitch bend: a fallback that won’t always work reliably, and only monophonic, but should work with all plugins
To get an idea, have a look at the video John did on microtonality in Dorico. It’s a real deep dive if you want to get into very detailed levels of control, but the first 5 minutes gives an overview, and there’s an example with Turkish 53-EDO at 33’25. Playback works out of the box once you’ve set up the tonality system for a project
According to ‘johnkprice’ onthe Dorico forum, this feature is only available in Dorico Pro, which is out of my range, certainly for now…never mind, I shall just have to wait and see if it ever appears in Cubase Pro…
