-MIDI BROKEN- Kontakt 5 & 7 in Cubase Pro 9.5

Hello folks,

Long time user here of Cubase Pro 9 and Kontakt 5 without problems for many years.

I recently bought a new PC dedicated to my DAW (updated to Cubase Pro 9.5 /Kontakt 5 & 7), PC all tweaked and optimized for DAW work, but I started having this weird MIDI issue in both Kontakt 5 and 7 when loaded in Cubase 9.5.

Despite all instruments in Kontakt 5 and 7 having separate MIDI channels, and associated MIDI tracks in Cubase Pro 9.5, Kontakt just acts as if EVERYTHING is in OMNI MIDI CHANNEL !!!

Meaning, if I press play in Cubase 9.5 to play a MIDI file that has a precise MIDI channel with a corresponding Kontakt instrument, ALL the loaded Kontakt instruments respond to this MIDI track despite being on separate MIDI channels.

Also old projects that work perfect in my old Cubase 9 / Kontakt 5 computer, are all messed-up in the new PC with Cubase 9.5 / Kontakt 5, & Kontakt 7 too if I do a new project in Cubase 9.5 . All the loaded Kontakt instruments responds to ALL the MIDI from Cubase 9.5, no matter what MIDI channel it’s on, and results in a cacophony of every MIDI channel being played by ALL INSTRUMENTS, ALL AT ONCE!!!

I cannot work on ongoing Cubase 9 / Kontakt 5 projects that I started in my old Cubase 9 (not 9.5) computer because the Kontakt MIDI is all messed-up in the new Cubase 9.5 PC…

Anyone experiencing such MIDI MISH-MASH with Kontakt 5 or 7 in Cubase 9.5 ???

All my projects worked fine in Cubase Pro 9, but in Cubase Pro 9.5 Kontakt is broken for me…

I lost several hours of work these past weeks trying to fix this KONTAKT MIDI problem in Cubase 9.5 but couldn’t, I had to load only 1 instrument per Kontakt instance in order to have separate MIDI channels to work in Cubase 9.5.

IS THIS A KNOWN PROBLEM in Cubase Pro 9.5, and HOW TO FIX THIS KONTAKT MIDI MISH-MASH problem???

I could not find this issue in the Kontakt forum and Cubase forum too, weird…

My new PC: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with 8 core /16 threads, 32 GB RAM, has fresh install of Windows 10 Pro, it’s optimized for DAW, nothing else in it, fresh install of last Cubase Pro 9.5version, and all Native Instruments stuff (Komplete/Kontakt 5&7) all from recent versions, latest as of a couple of weeks ago, and RME Babyface with latest driver. Latency Mon gives great score to this new PC too, and I’m getting low CPU usage on old projects that were halting my old Cubase 9 PC, so my new Cubase 9.5 PC is powerful enough.

Thanks for any help.

it works just fine for me by picking the midi channel in Cubase and the corresponding channel in the Kontakt patch, but it’s been a couple of years since I used Cubase 9.5. Either way, this worked just fine back then too, but of course, there was no Kontakt 7 at that time.

Maybe this is a problem with older projects that used Kontakt 5, I think that will now load with Kontakt 7. Native Instruments did Kontakt 5 as kontakt.dll, the same for Kontakt 7, but Kontakt 6 was kontakt6.dll if I remember correctly.

Many many times I went over the MIDI parameters, checking, making sure all is assigned as it should both in Cubase 9.5 and Kontakt 5 and 7, but no luck, the MIDI MISH MASH occurs despite that, and all MIDI tracks play ALL the loaded instruments all at once in a big cacophony…

I’ve checked if there was MIDI modifiers or something like that but no, and I checked the MIDI event monitor/list in Cubase and there was nothing wrong showing-up there, but when I press play, total CACOPHONY.

I never had such problems in Cubase Pro 9 since 9 came out, but 9.5 in my new PC is a total mess and I can’t work…

Thanks for chiming-in.

OK I found the problem and the solution. Somehow, something changed a parameter in both Kontakt 5 and Kontakt 7 in my new Cubase 9.5 PC. The problem and solution is explained in this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOwSmPF9UFM

Now I can get back to work…
