Midi cc Key Editor inquiry

Hi there. This is my first time contributing a post here. I am a Finale refugee and have taken much time to learn and work as fluently as possible in Dorico. I have two inquiries:

  1. When I enter midi cc data into the key editor and save the file - the data remains. When I open up the file, midi cc data is missing throughout the score. This is also caused when I copy and paste at any place in the score, various cc data is erased. This causes me to re-draw cc data over and over again wasting time. (I am aware there is an option to turn off copying with midi cc - but that simply increases my workload.) Here is an example:

Midi CC Missing.pdf (227.3 KB). Given that I have not seen any recent forum topics on this matter, I must be doing something wrong and would appreciate your help.

  2. I need to enter midi cc data to control VSL instruments. The drawing of midi data is time-consuming and tedious work, but necessary. Due to a disability, I cannot draw freehand. Therefore, I only have access to linear curves available in Dorico. In my DAW, I have access to Bézier curves. As such, I would greatly appreciate if Dorico could implement Bézier curves in Dorico to provide greater options to effect playback and ease of production.

Thank you for your time.

Hi, a few days ago I initiated a thread where the same problem was described.

In fact I’m glad that you started this thread. It confirms what I experienced and I hope that soon this bug will be solved, because it feels very uncomfortable to work at a piece, feeling unsecure, if you’re work is still there tomorrow. I take care, that there is always a backup at the end of the day, to take care that the work I did is safe. And then it turns out that you effords are partly in vain. This is not good. But I’m sure that the team is aware of this problem and will take care.

You have probably already considered this but I’ll share anyway: when I have this issue, it is usually because I entered the cc data on one instrument/player thinking I had entered it on a different one.

Are you certain that you have the correct instrument/player selected? Sometimes if we accidentally click on a different staff, the channel seen in the key editor has changed from what we expected. I’ve also had this happen when I’ve selected the correct channel but then clicked on the select button (arrow icon in the key editor space) only to have the channel change when I click on a cc value to edit.

I missed the original thread so decided to test this now. I created my own project from scratch just to make sure there wasn’t something project-specific. Initially, I thought it was OK as I was using the freehand tool but when I switched to the line tool as specified, I found that adding the CC data seemed to work fine for all instruments in a string quartet but when I saved, closed Dorico and then reopened the file, only violin 1 had retained the data. So this definitely is a serious bug in my book.

Incidentally, in the dynamics lane if I go in to adjust a hairpin or dynamic level manually, I frequently find the score markings to be missing so I have to draw in manually from scratch rather than just adjusting the dynamics which should already be there. It’s inconsistent and unpredictable, Quite often the dynamic marking will reappear at some point (I believe the behaviour is caused by a change in how the dynamic data is refreshed to improve performance) but it’s not to be relied on. Because of the unpredictability, I’ve hesitated to post on this recently but it’s possible others have noticed something similar

At any rate, this particular issue, though annoying, can be worked round with a little extra time. The issue of copied data disappearing after closing Dorico seems more serious.

Here’s a ditto for Bezier curves. Like the OP I have a physical issue (essential tremors) that make detailed line-drawing untenable.

dko22,

Thank you for replicating this problem. I appreciate it. You’re right, the effect it has on me is insecurity as given I work on large scores, I never know whether hours of work are going to be saved.

I wonder what’s next here? How does the Dorico dev. team log forum user input for immediate or future problem-solving?

yes – I’m surprised that Dorico doesn’t have this yet as many people rely on it in Cubase. For me personally it’s not essential (I’m fairly used to drawing a line by hand if needed) but could certainly be handy so I’m quite happy to echo @quarternote 's original request.

don’t worry, the team will be reading this and really important bugs will get priority – particularly if it’s something not too hard to fix. If it’s tricky, it could take a little longer.

kasky1,

Thank you for your response. It’s appreciated.

I feel like I’m being pretty careful about midi data entry. In this case, I went back and scrubbed a whole section completing all midi cc entries. Then close the file. Open it. Open key editor to discover missing midi cc points.

You have brought up a secondary issue however, That is, the rapid changing to another channel upon clicking a midi event in the key editor. To explain: let’s say I’m currently on the Violin channel with the key editor open. I then click the Violoncello staff and the key editor changes to the Violoncello data. I then click on a midi event in the Violoncello key editor to edit an item - and instantaneously, upon the click, the key editor changes to another channel - usually, the first channel in the score, in the case, Flute.

So, momentarily, I am confused about where I am? Why is it, I am seeing the Flute key editor when I clicked the Violoncello key editor? It can be quite disruptive when this happens frequently during a session. Not sure why the behaviour occurs or how to stop it.

Apologies for the inconvenience caused by this bug. We will fix it as soon as possible.

Thank you Daniel, that would be appreciated.

While I have you, any thoughts on Bézier curves for the midi cc Key Editor? In my case , such an addition would be a major enhancement to Dorico, I suspect others may feel similarly.

Thanks again,

Thanks the Dorico team for rolling out a new version so quickly. May I ask if this bug is no longer reproduced in 6.2.10? I downgraded from 6.2 to 6.1.10 because of this issue.

Daniel, thank you and your team for addressing this issue as quickly as you did. Most appreciated.

I did some tests and what I saw here all things that I wright in the cc lanes, is saved just as I wrote it, also with Key editor Locked View and when I use copy/paste.
