MIDI Controllers not being detected on startup (N13)

hey

I’m trying to figure out why some of my MIDI Controllers don’t get detected on startup, forcing me to un-plug/plug them in and restart Nuendo. After this step they always show up.

I can think of 2 cases (literally out of logic)

1- it has to do with with my new PC and its USB power managment
2- it’s a bug on Nuendo’ side

Only because:

  • unplug/plug back in always solves the issue

Which makes me think Nuendo’s prefs are setup correctly and shouldn’t be anything to change there.
All my controllers

  • Keylab Essentials 88
  • MIDI Fighter Twister
  • TEC Breath Controller
Are all up to date and the thing that pzzles me is that it’s random

sometimes it’s the keyboard but for instance, today the breath controller was missing
And it should not be a USB cable issue since the breath controller specifically has just been serviced. (again unplug + plug always works)

Do you think of any other possibilities I might look into?

When you look into your system settings, before unplugging / re plugging, what does the computer see in the USB / MIDI department?

Are all USB connections? Or do you have a MIDI interface? Are some connected to each other, as in a keyboard with USB which connects to a MIDI only device?

Is there a USB hub? (I have a ten port USB hub that needs to wake up so it is a thing.)

I used to experience this semi-regularly. I finally tried turning fast-boot off in the BIOS and the USB devices showed up far more consistently.
It still happens once in a while, but it’s a pretty rare event these days.

Thank you both!

I will test it more next time it happens.
I switched to Win for work reasons after 15 years of Mac so I’m still learning the platform.

To answer Nicholas’ questions specifically:
When you look into your system settings, before unplugging / re plugging, what does the computer see in the USB / MIDI department?

Haven’t checked that in that particular moment but if I go to “device management” I see a whole bunch of non specified USB devices. So not sure which is which. Am I looking in the right spot?

Are all USB connections? Or do you have a MIDI interface? Are some connected to each other, as in a keyboard with USB which connects to a MIDI only device?
All USB connections. All connected independently.

  • Keylab connected to the motherboard
  • Breath Controller connected to a USB port on top of the PC case itself

Is there a USB hub?

  • MIDI Fighter Twister connected to a 7 port USB hub (self powered which I turn on myself before switching the PC on) which is connected to a 3.0 USB port to the motherboard.

And this is an important bit: anytime the Keylab doesn’t show up, if I press a key, Nuendo is receiving that MIDI signal (Lower right with tiny orange meters)
This alone makes me lean into Nuendo being the issue.

But I still need to run a proper test next time it happens.
Also before dealing with the BIOS. Just for the sake of potential bug tracking.

Yes. It seems then that it is the computer not recognizing those devices. Not sure what you can do about that, since I have not touched a Windows PC since 2000. I am sure someone else on here can give better ideas as to what is happening.

Well, how to explain that Nuendo receives those MIDI inputs?
If it does then the device is active in the Win system and is sending MIDI to Nuendo and Nuendo is receiving it no?

Also today, to confirm its random behavior, Nuendo has selected another MIDI input (LPX MIDI2 to be precise and I’ve not used this device for months) when loading a new instrument track and, if the fact that Nuendo picks the last used MIDI input by default, then it’s bugged because I’m 100% sure the last input I used was “All MIDI Inputs”.

All points to Nuendo being the issue to me (so far)

But thanks for chiming in Nicholas
