MIDI Effects: Asleep At The Wheel

Why have there been no new MIDI effects for decades?

Hi,

The answer is simple: Because of other priorities.

In a DAW, MIDI should be the priority or maybe most customers never use it. Every year I hope something is done and nothing but crickets…

Arpeggiators are one of the most widely used MIDI FX in not only Electronic but also modern Pop music. And yet Cubase has included the substandard “ArpacheSX” plugin that, as the name suggests, goes all the way back to Cubase SX days. This is beyond ridiculous.

Every other DAW includes a much more full-featured MIDI arpeggiator than ArpacheSX.

And this says nothing about the incredibly lame StepDesigner MIDI plugin in Cubase. Again, every other DAW developer has added advanced step sequencing features to their flagship DAW. But not Steinberg. They seem too busy trying to work around decades of legacy bloat that are the result of one poor decision after another along the way, starting with that all-in-one window paradigm for the original Cubase. (I forget the name of this approach to windowing within applications which was inexplicably used in other Windows programs at the time including Excel if I’m not mistaken.)

I think they need new blood. I would love to know the politics of this.
