Can I modify volume at midi event level? I don’t mean velocity but volume?
I can automate volume sure, but it’d be great to adjust volume at event level, not just via an automation lane.

Volume is a (MIDI) event. You can edit it e.g. in the Key Editor. I am sure you mean something else, but what could that be? Maybe a screenshot would help.
Yes, MIDI volume is CC7, is that what you mean?
That doesn’t really work for me. In an audio event, you can set its volume in DB. I think I found you can’t do that for MIDI events though. That’s OK I’ll render in place and edit the audio event volume. Happy to hear if you know a better workaround!
When using MIDI (1.0) the volume is always an integer value from 0 to 127. It is up to the sound module (e.g. a VSTi) how it will translate that into dB.
If you’d change the volume of a single MIDI event on a track, what MIDI volume should the following events have?
Cubase has no way of knowing the starting default MIDI volume of a plugin. — So it could not possibly know what MIDI volume to return to.
Therefore you have to look after setting the volume also at the end of the event you’re changing - so the rest of the track is at the right volume.
Audio is different. Every sample effectively has a volume. So changing a range of samples means, that the later samples in that track simply keep their already existing volumes.
