MIDI Events show up on MIDI Track, but nothing shows up in MIDI List Editor or MIDI Key Editor

Hello,

I am pretty new to Cubase Pro 14 but not Cubase in general. Today I ran into an interesting issue that I am not sure if you’ve run into or know how to solve it…

I was opening two MIDI Tracks in my project with one track being the root harmony. the other track was going to be an additional harmony. As is typical, I could both track events with the active track events showing nicely, the other track showed as a ‘ghost’ image. I could activate either by selecting any particular notes that I want;ed to change. So far so good.

When I was done, I could see there were events on both tracks. However, if I chose the MIDI List Editor, or the MIDI Key editor, there was nothing there. If I selected all on the track that didn’t show in the List or Key Editor, the events would show up in the MIDI List, but in a ‘ghost’ image. Once closed and re-opened, they were empty again with nothing in the List Editor or the Key Editor.

Somehow, I lost the 2nd harmony track that I was working on, and couldn’t find it again.

I went in and then opened a new track and just input the 2nd harmony part manually.

I’ve never seen this happen before in my older Cubase version that I was previously running.

I thank you for any suggestions about this, as it had taken quite a while to get that 2nd harmony track going where it would show up in List and Key editors.

Thanks everyone!

Hi,

What exactly do you mean by this, please? Do you mean, you open the Key Editor, of MIDI Parts?

Be aware, there are MIDI/Instrument Tracks in the project and every track contains the MIDI Parts. The Key/List Editors how the content of the MIDI Parts. You could have multiple MIDI Parts on a track (even overlapping). You always have to be aware, in which MIDI Part are you inserting the MIDI Notes/Controllers.

Hi Martin, Thank you for your response. I will give you a bit better detail on what I was doing….

I had two MIDI tracks of harmony parts. One was the melody, the other was the harmony track to it. I found that there were a couple of notes in the harmony MIDI track that were a bit off, so I wanted to correct that track by moving some of those notes.

I clicked on both the melody part and the harmony part so that I could see them together in the Key Editor.

I made my changes to the harmony notes I corrected. Then I closed both of the tracks in the Key Editor window.

When I went back into the main Project Window, I could see both midi parts showing activity on them. However, When I clicked on only the harmony track, nothing for that track showed up in either the Key Editor or in the MIDI List window. I could hear the notes on playback, but there was no way I could see them in either the Key Editor or in the MIDI List Window. There was nothing there.

I ‘Selected All’ for the track that I could see in the project window, but not in the Key Editor or MIDI List Window. After selecting on that selected Track, I could see the MIDI List info, but the information was in a different, dimmer view of the information that usual.

When I closed the MIDI List Window for it, and re-opened the MIDI List Window, again there was no information there to see….

I’ve never run into that before. I ended up deleting that MIDI Track and ended up re-doing the harmony track again, and this time it was fine. It seems to stem from when I had selected both MIDI Tracks to see at the same time, and edit the harmony track.

Interesting. I just wasn’t sure if anyone else had ever experienced something like that where you could definitely see that there was something on the MIDI Track when in the main Project Window, but when selected, the entire track had no MIDI info in the List Editor or the Key Editor for that track.

Thanks again for responding, Martin,

Your description fits Martin’s assumption that you had an empty midi part overlaying the part that you were actually interested in.
Maybe that empty part got created by mistake.
