MIDI Export issue (drag and drop, export midi file)

Hello everyone,

I’m currently running into a rather puzzling issue and would appreciate some guidance.

I’m working on a concert session that contains both AUDIO (backing tracks, SMPTE, click) and MIDI data (Program Change messages for two devices as well as note data for a synthesizer).

I have two external devices whose presets I switch via MIDI Program Change: one responds to MIDI Channel 1, the other to MIDI Channel 2.

I’ve prepared a dedicated MIDI track where I program both Program Change (#PC) and Control Change (#CC) data. The problem appears when I export the MIDI by dragging and dropping the MIDI event out of Cubase. In this case, part of the data gets altered or truncated — specifically, channel information for one of the parameters is lost, and some values are not preserved correctly.

When I use the standard “Export MIDI File” function instead, everything is exported correctly. However, this workflow is quite inconvenient for me because:

  • I have several dozen songs within a single session and need to render each one separately

  • I’m not entirely sure how to properly export only selected MIDI tracks from a project in a clean way
    (I’ve already checked the forum and found a workaround: soloing the track and enabling VOL/PAN in the export options. This does result in only the selected track being exported, but I’ve occasionally noticed that additional empty tracks still appear after reopening the file. I’m wondering if there is a more reliable method.)

  • I’m working with the Arranger Track, where each song is a separate event. Sometimes, at the end of a file, I see program change data that seems unrelated to that section. Is it possible that Cubase is automatically including MIDI data from the beginning of the next Arranger event at the end of the exported range?

I hope I’ve explained the situation clearly enough. I’ve attached screenshots showing both the MIDI export result and the drag-and-drop behavior for comparison.

I have one more question.

I have a track that contains tempo changes. However, when I export it as a MIDI file, it seems like the tempo information is not preserved correctly (or is flattened to a single tempo), which causes the MIDI to drift and become misaligned with the audio.

Is there any way to work around this so that tempo changes are properly included and the exported MIDI stays in sync?
