Midi Guitar3-Insert-Plugin with VST3 Live? How does it work?

Dear Swarm Intelligence,
Has anyone managed to route Midi Guitar 3 as an insert effect to a MIDI track in order to control a VST3 instrument, such as Halion 7? I don’t have any problems with this in Cubase because Cubase provides the correct MIDI channel for Midi Guitar 3. In VST3 Live (Pro), however, I can’t find a suitable MIDI channel in the Layer section that connects to Midi Guitar 3.
(Background: I want to use my electric double bass to generate MIDI notes to trigger Halion 7.)
Thank you very much!

Maybe you should use MG as an instrument (i.e. in its own layer), rather than an insert, and chain its output to Halion.

The way to do this in VST Live:

  • create a stack
  • choose your audio/instrument in as input for that stack
  • insert MIDI Guitar as your first Insert

From here, there are two possible routes.

Number One:

  • open MIDI Guitar 3 and add the VSTi of your liking to, let’s say Chain 1
  • the VSTi should now listen to your bass/guitar playing

Number two:

  • under MIDI Output (in MIDI Guitar 3) choose “MIDI Guitar Virtual Output”
  • if this is the first time you’re doing this, go to Devices/Reset MIDI. VST Live is not yet seeing that MIDI port.
  • when you’re done, this port can be used as a MIDI input device all over VST Live, for tracks as well as for Layers.
  • this is, for obvious reasons, the more flexible solution

BTW: Inserting MIDI Guitar 3 as a VSTi won’t work at all, as the plug-in isn’t registering as such. In short: You can’t do it!

And: Instead of creating a (Global) Stack you can of course also create an audio track and insert MIDI Guitar 3 here. It’s less flexible, however, than setting this up in a Global Stack.
