MIDI import problem partially solved

So it’s been annoying me that even using drag and drop with a midi file I couldn’t get the clip to land on the target track. It would always create a new midi track at the very bottom of the (enormous track count!) session.

Finally I see why. For some reason Nuendo is creating the midi tracks as linear by default - and of course they need to be musical. I can think of times when having a midi track linear is useful, but for the most part I’m sure musical mode for MIDI should be the default setting?

I noticed when trying to drop the midi file onto a midi track a short orange flavoured message saying something about time mismatch. That got me thinking and sure enough every midi track I’d created had by default been set to linear.

I cannot see a preference to change this so that MIDI tracks default to Musical mode.

This doesn’t solve the other issue, when using Import Midi file, not only does it always create a new track, despite highlighting the target track and setting the cursor at intended location, but it goes to the start (of an hour plus session) of the timeline. That is plain stupid! And I’ve tried all the settings suggested to correct that, still no luck.

The problem with that is that I certainly don’t want my audio tracks musical, they must reman linear - and looking at the drop down menu on right click in the timeline I have Bar + Beats Linear selected, which I assume is so that I can use both types of tracks ? Or does the setting displayed in your screenshot only apply to MIDI tracks, it’s not clear.
It would be a disaster to have any audio tracks follow tempo changes - of which there are many in this project.

It’s for both audio and MIDI track types, and only applies to newly created tracks. Alternatively there is a PLE preset that will toggle the timebase of selected tracks. You can use that instead of, or in conjunction with this setting.

Drag and drop works better for this, of course as long as you drag to a MIDI track that is set to musical mode.

OK, well as all new tracks are newly created (!) I’ll stick with just remembering to re-set the midi tracks to musical after creating. It’s a pity there isn’t the option to create MIDI as musical and audio as linear. How often are people using midi tracks in free, non-tempo related time? Unless I’m missing something here.
