Midi input broken Dorico 6, Mac OS 26

Midi input not working - I read the previous posts on this topic
Dorico Version 6.2.10.6140 (Mar 27 2026)
Mac Mini 2024 OS 26.3.1

M-Audio Axiom 49 controller connected via USB

MIDI is not working with Dorico 6. MIDI input is working with other apps; Midi Monitor, Ableton Live and Digital Performer.
Preferences/Play/Midi Input Devices indicates Dorico recognizes USB Axiom 49 Port 1 and USB Axiom 49 Port 2.
If I uncheck the midi input devices check boxes after I start Dorico, but before I open a project, I can check and uncheck the boxes normally. If I attempt to uncheck the midi input devices check box after I have opened a project, Dorico freezes.

Please advise.

Much obliged.

Welcome to the forum, @Arthur_Allen .

It’s already some time ago, but we had another user having trouble with an Axiom 49 and at that time the solution was to filter out MIDI Controller data. Please try that, too. You can find the setting in the Dorico Preferences dialog:

Ulf,

Thank you for your prompt response regarding my problem with MIDI input. Unfortunately toggling on “Filter out MIDI controllers “ did not solve my problem. I am still not able to enter notes via MIDI using the M-Audio Axiom. I also tried MIDI note input using my other MIDI keyboard which is an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88. I was also unable to get MIDI input to work with that keyboard.

I have not been doing much music notation work recently so the last time I used Dorico was a month ago. At that time I had no problem with MIDI input using the M-Audio Axiom. Could this be a problem with the most recent Dorico update?

Unlikely, as this problem has not been reported by most users, and there weren’t any changes to MIDI function in the update.

The Audio Engine is crashing, causing Dorico to hang. You do seem to have a lot of VST plug-ins. Maybe test Dorico without some of your third-party VSTs.

Thanks Benwiggy,

I disabled all plugins and MIDI input now works with Dorico. Now I just have to isolate the troublemaker.

Thanks!

Please tell us the troublemaker when you can find it. And if you can’t figure it out, please upload here a diagnostic report (Help > Create Diagnostic Report). Maybe from the logs and thing I can find something. Thanks

Unfortunately, though I was able to get the MIDI working again, I was unable isolate the problem plugin.

What I did was:

  1. Remove all plugins from the Library/Audio folder.

  2. Put the plugins back into the Library/Audio folder one at time. I launched Dorico after adding each plugin and checked for MIDI input functionality.

  3. Even after replacing all plugins, Dorico MIDI input was still working, so I was unable to replicate the problem or isolate one problem plugin.

I have included a Dorico diagnostics report which I ran after the plugin. I divided the diagnostics report into separate archives so it would be in files <4mB

Hi @Arthur_Allen , NotePerformer is the troublemaker. There are quite a few crash files of the audio engine which point at NotePerformer as the cause of the crash.
Now, if the audio engine crashes, Dorico may still continue working, but MIDI won’t work, because the audio engine opens the MIDI ports and sends the MIDI data to Dorico, but of course, if the audio engine crashes, MIDI data will never reach Dorico.
But why is it suddenly working now? Because the VSTScanner, which runs at the start up of Dorico’s audio engine , detected NotePerformer as a trouble maker and put it on a blocklist which tells the audio engine to ignore NotePerformer and never load it again.

If you want to use NotePerformer in Dorico, then please get the latest NP version from Wallander Instruments and reset the audio engine cache data via the Dorico Preferences dialog.
In case of further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the useful information!

I just installed the latest version of NotePerformer (version 5.1.2) and Dorico and NotePerformer now seem to be working together.
