I use this function “MIDI input in Key Editor” rather often and I think the way it is supposed to work is that the focus advance to the next midi event, after an input is received. So to change the melody just select the first midi event (note) play the key on your keyboard, and Cubase will automatically advance to the next event. But sometime it doesn’t!! After inputing the pitch I want the “focus” shifts down to the controller lane. It would be very nice to have preference for that to be Only notes.

You mean the “MIDI Input” as part of Step Input options, right? Regarding manual, next MIDI Note should become selected.
But actually you are right, if the next MIDI event is Not a MIDI Note but a MIDI CC instead, the MIDI CC event has been selected.
