Midi keyboard randomly losing connection

I have tried previous suggestions to cure this problem, but to no avail. It doesn’t lose power, just the connection to my DAW. I then have to power the midi keyboard down and then on again to regain connection. It is very random. sometimes it happens when I’m using it, and sometimes when I’m not. It can be an hour or 2 minutes, between disconnections. I’m at a loss now. I have been sent instructions re going into the registry etc., but all of that is a bit out of my comfort zone. Does anybody have a simple fix for this. I have changed cables etc.

I have tried previous suggestions to cure this problem, but to no avail.

What suggestions have you tried so we don’t run through all the same ones again?

USB MIDI or DIN MIDI? You have not given enough information about the problem nor attempts to be of much help.

Hi Grim

Removing the USB from the powered hub and going directly into PC Laptop
Changing the cable for a new one
Disabling power saving on USB serial bus controllers
Making sure that I was using the Microsoft driver as opposed to the “inmusic” driver

I think that was it

It works perfectly otherwise

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave B

USB Midi

This is what I have tried

Removing the USB from the powered hub and going directly into PC Laptop
Changing the cable for a new one
Disabling power saving on USB serial bus controllers
Making sure that I was using the Microsoft driver as opposed to the “inmusic” driver

I’m running Cubase 15 Pro
Laptop i9 Core
64 GB RAM

So to be sure this is the setting in device manager for anything labelled “usb root hub” and you’re unticking “allow computer to turn off this device to save power”??

Did you also disable usb selective suspend in the active power scheme?

Hi Grim

I did the untick, “allow computer to turn off this device to save power” in the USB root hub

Don’t think I did USB selective suspend

How do I do that

Find it in your windows advanced power settings, you can just Google if you don’t know how.

AI seems to think device manager setting you did already covers it already but I’m not convinced they are exactly the same thing so set it anyway and see if it makes any difference.

Might also be useful to try different USB ports, if you can. Some devices do not work correctly when plugged into a USB3 slot and are recommended for USB2.

What is the device in question?

It doesn’t appear to have that option, and when googling it tells me to do what I have already done

Which device is it?

Completely random disconnects sounds like a bad cable or bad USB port. If there’s some specific action that triggers it in Cubase, then that can be different and can be debugged/traced.

I’ve helped a number of customers now who had bad USB cables. It’s not as uncommon as you might think, especially with all the incredibly cheap barely-spec cables for sale out there that work really only for charging.

All my usb ports are 3. my device is a M audio Oxygen49 mk4

Can you open device manager (right-click the Windows logo on your task bar), scroll down to “Sound, video and game controllers”, find the m-audio keyboard, right-click it, choose “properties” and paste a screenshot of the first tab?

Thanks.

Hi Pete
It’s an M-Audio Oxygen49
I have changed the cable. There doesn’t appear to be any particular Cubase action that triggers it as it is so random. Sometimes happens when I’m playing; mostly happens when it’s left alone for a bit. It can stay connected for a couple of hours, but it can also disconnect after a couple of minutes. Power remains on, though

Thanks. That confirms it’s using our MIDI 1 class driver.

m-audio does have an older article for this. Could be power management related.

But given that it’s random and is while being actively used, it doesn’t seem to me that power management would be the cause, unless it also coincides with low battery on a laptop or something.

Note that power over USB is a separate set of wires so just being powered on is not indicative of a USB connection to the PC. I’ve seen an increasing number of cases where faulty USB cables cause signal disconnects, but not power disconnects. It’s likely more prevalent now because of the number of cheap USB cables out there that are intended really only for charging.

One of my hobbies is astrophotography. This is a huge issue there because the protocol for transferring images from the camera to a computer has no error checking or anything – it’s just a stream, so it’s incredibly susceptible to cheap cables.

Not saying that’s the issue here, especially since you have tried different cables, just that it’s quite common, and is not often what folks think about. Several times now I’ve had to beg folks to try a different cable when they insisted that wasn’t the issue, and it did turn out to be the issue.

And just yesterday, someone came to Discord and were thinking that a problem with their MIDI device was a July Windows Update. Turns out one of their USB ports on the laptop is actually going bad at a hardware level.

I had a similar issue with the PreSonus 32R that I ultimately traced to the cable, in spite of the cable being in good condition and relatively new. I was hesitant to believe that this cable was the problem, but ultimately it was. Not being a USB-powered device, this was likely a signal quality issue. Could be that (as Pete mentioned) that the signal quality was degraded enough that it would ultimately fail.

I discovered a few others that also would not work with this device, so probably a good idea to try multiple cables from a known source. Cable length could also play a factor, especially in a marginal cable.

For astro work, I settled on l-com cables ordered directly from them after having otherwise seemingly good cables from Amazon fail on the rig. To be fair, it’s outside so dust, dirt, and even a little moisture at times are factors. But after years of use, I have yet to have one fail.

I also have some of their screw-in cables in some industrial hubs for some of the MIDI devices. Good for ensuring they don’t rip out. I wish all MIDI controllers and devices had tapped holes for USB :stuck_out_tongue:

They sell active optical USB cables too, which are super expensive. I have never tried those, so no idea if they work for audio/MIDI.

I’ve ordered this cable now
Ordered: ‘Neo by Oyaide d+ USB (Class…’
Will try tomorrow and let you know

Have you got many other things connected via USB?
My laptop simply didn’t have enough power to run all the things I had connected.
