MIDI Keyboard/soundcard problem

I have just acquired an Alesis QS8, and have just managed to get midi to register on the panel of the usb to Midi converter. It registers both in and out when I press the keys. I downloaded a midi monitor which shows Midi input, but it stops working when I put the soundcard into the PC. I’m not sure if there is some “loop” happening to cause this. Any ideas?

What sound card? What midi interface?

Soundcard: Focusrite Scarlett

The Midi cable is a twin DIN plug from the QS8 that converts to USB.

It all works with Cubase 14 and my M-Audio Oxygen keyboard

Is the midi interface one if those cheap ones on eBay first about £10? If so they are known be be really bad. You don’t say what make it is so I’m assuming it’s non branded?

Does the Scarlett have midi ports? You don’t say which version it is? Have you enabled the midi ports in Cubase? Have you set the track in Cubase to midi input any?

The whole set up I have with the FOCUSRITE Scarlett (over £100) has been working perfectly with my m audio Oxygen keyboard controller and Cubase 14 pro. The problem I’m having is with the Alesis QS8, that I was recently given. It will transmit midi via midi 5 pin ports, converted to usb through a cable, but as soon as I connect the sound card to the pc as well, the QS8 stops transmitting midi. That is the problem that I’m having

Then the conflict is between the audio interface and the midi usb driver. You still haven’t named them. I doubt very much that the QS8 is the problem as the midi out just transmits. That should not stop transmitting. It doesn’t really care what it is connected to. It just pushes out. I suspect the midi interface. Or a conflict.

Another way to test the QS8 is to link midi in to midi out with the midi cable on the QS8 (turn it off before linking otherwise you will get a midi loop). Without the cable linking in and out there will be no sound with local off. Connect the midi cable and if when playing the QS8 you get a sound then there is not a problem with it. Try with two different midi cables as one could be faulty.
