Midi out

I am using Dorico 5.1.81.2225 (Jan16 2025) on trial. If it goes well I will buy Dorico Elements.
I am play MIDI IN from my Yamaha Clavinova using Roland UN-ONE USB interface.
I want to be able to play MIDI OUT to my Clavinova.

I can find no MIDI OUT setting.

Is there one? Is there one in the latest Elements software?

In Play mode, click the VST and MIDI tab. The bottom left will show a MIDI Instruments section. From there, click the ā€˜+’ sign and choose your Clavinova (assuming it’s configured correctly). Then, switch to the Track Inspector and route the player you want to the Clavinova.

… and welcome to the forum.

HI @bovey , welcome to the forum.

There are also some screenshots to be found.

Please tell me if you find out how to get Dorico to change sounds on your Clavinova. Trying to get Dorico to playback on Genos, but string, guitar, brass is all GM piano sound.

Thanks, Ulf, for the welcome and the most helpful advice.

I have made some progress.

The story so far:

VST/Midi Channel 1 = Halion Sonic Horn ROUTING Halion Sonic Ch 1

VST/Midi Channel 2 = Halion Sonic Piano ROUTING Halion Sonic Ch 2

Playback through Mac= Horn+Piano Chapeau!

But when

VST Channel 1 = Halion Sonic Horn MIDI instrument = Clavinova ANDROUTING = Clavinova ch1

VST Channel 2 = Halion Sonic Piano MIDI instrument = Clavinova AND ROUTING = Clavinova ch2

(In other words, I play MIDI OUT)

THEN

both channel play through Clavinova

BUT both play as Piano

I’m hoping I’m really close to the solution and that it only hours of trail and error that have muddled my brain.

Can you please tell me what I need to do to get multi-voices coming out of the Clavinova…as I can with Cakewalk, which I am trying to leave?

Enter the bank and program information in the Init base switch of an expression map. The Init base will send setup information to instruments upon loading said instrument (and perhaps each time a score is played from the very beginning?).

Sending Bank and Program changes via Expression Map

In the Play/Track Inspector Tab, Select a Stave/Instrument that you wish to setup. Click here to open the currently used expression map.

If your instrument uses velocity dynamics, make a copy of the ā€˜Default’ expression map and name it in a way that is best for you. If it uses CC11 expression style dynamics, clone that one instead, and so forth…

In my case here I’m setting up a Flute instrument for my Fantom XR, and I want CC11 Dynamics, so I’ll click this map, and touch the clone button in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Next, I’ll Rename this new copy of CC11 Dynamics Expression Map to ā€œXR FS Fluteā€, select the Init Base Switch, and enter the bank and Program Change information that calls up the Flute on my Fantom.

Click OK once I’m done. Make sure my new expression map is active for the stave in the Track Inspector.

Repeat this process for each Stave.

Once you’re done setting up your maps, you can go back to the Expression Map editor and export them so they are easy to bring into future projects. You can hold control, select several maps, and export groups of expression maps as a set, or you can export them one at a time. For an instrument like the Clavinova, I personally recommend setting aside a folder/directory somewhere and exporting them one by one. This way it’s quick and easy to ā€˜import’ them into any future projects as needed without stuffing the project with a bunch of un-needed maps.

For Drum Kits, you’ll likely need to do those on Channel 10. You also need to assign a drum map. With a Yamaha instrument you’ll usually want the Yamaha XG drum map. It’s very similar to the General MIDI drum map with some minor differences on the Brush kit. Check your Clavinova manual if you’re not sure. Dorico will also allow you to make custom drum maps if GM or XG doesn’t cover it properly for you.

Note, it’s also possible to have an instrument change patches with each ā€œBaseā€ or ā€œadd-onā€ switch in an expression map. A prime example would be hopping between Arco, Pizzicato, and Tremolo string section sounds.

I’m not sure about Elements and SE versions of Dorico, but I do know for certain with Pro you can make special ā€˜playback templates’ that can remember your expression maps and choose your custom instruments automatically. Of course all versions of Dorico will remember what you’ve done with each ā€˜score’, so you won’t have to keep redoing these expression maps every time you open the project.

@Kjolsund and @bovey, please have a look at Brian Roland’s post just above.

Thanks for all the ideas. Much appreciated.
