Selecting an Output Port should be optional. Not all remote controllers have an input port. If I don’t select an output port I cannot add the control surface

Great, thanks! I have two such devices where I had to sacrifice other midi ports as a workaround. 
In the mean time, you could use loopMIDI by Tobias Erichsen to creat virtual MIDI ports and use these as dummy outputs ports.
