I programmed my first-ever MIDI Learn commands this morning, and since then, MIDI Thru has been enabling itself, though the box remains un-ticked in the Preferences. Ticking it and then un-ticking it works until I open a different project. My goal is for MIDI Thru to be entirely disabled.
Similar to what one user experienced in this topic, the problem doesn’t appear immediately: if I open Dorico and quickly input some notes, I hear no playback. I think this is due to the VST sounds loading, though, because by a few seconds later, when they have loaded, I start hearing MIDI Thru playback when entering notes.
The problem appears in other files, including files I have not opened or modified since before this morning. Removing my MIDI Learn commands manually by editing the keyboard shortcuts .JSON file didn’t work. I’m running Dorico 6.2.10 and Windows 10.
I’m going to try reinstalling Dorico. In the meantime, has anybody else encountered this? What’s the fix?
• turning MIDI input entirely off and then on again
• turning off my MIDI keyboard and then turning it back on
• re-applying the Auto playback template
I tried deliberately turning MIDI Thru on, then exiting and restarting Dorico, then turning MIDI Thru off, then restarting Dorico again. That didn’t work either.
Also didn’t work: creating a new MIDI Learn command, then ticking MIDI Thru, then un-ticking MIDI Thru. When I opened a new project, MIDI Thru was once again enabled (and the box remained un-ticked).
I figure this has something to do with MIDI Learn, because I’ve been using Dorico since v. 1.0, always had MIDI Thru disabled, and only this morning encountered this problem for the first time.
Just guessing — it’s not really my expertise! It might be a midi device sending the change to dorico. Try disconnecting your device(s) and restart dorico. Then add devices back one at a time to see if the problem pops up again. Check the device to see if midi thru is set to on. Hope that helps.
Thanks, Jim, but disconnecting and re-connecting my MIDI controller didn’t work, and my controller has no controls of its own regarding MIDI Thru. (It’s a very basic Casio keyboard.) In any case the device that the MIDI is passing “thru” is my PC.
OK, I finally fixed this! I uninstalled Dorico again, then searched C:\Windows\Users for any file or folder involving the name Dorico, deleted everything that belonged to Dorico itself (but left alone files from other Steinberg software, like the Download Assistant), and lastly reinstalled Dorico. Now disabling MIDI Thru works.
When the problem first arose, I had ticked a few other boxes in the Play settings, such as “Suspend when application is in background,” and I wonder if another box was part of the issue originally.
