Midi 'volume'

Hi there

is there a way to raise the volume of midi-track,i know its velocity
but i im on my way learning Cubase…

thanks
martin

Velocity is usually not volume, though it can certainly sound/feel like it at times.

If you imagine a piano or a guitar, velocity was meant to represent the speed and intensity with which the musician would hit the key resp. the string. Often that would also lead to louder results but would also give a different kind of sound.
With MIDI every instrument/synth has to decide how exactly they want to turn this information into sound. It could be volume, it could opening a filter or applying vibrato.

On many MIDI devices the volume is influenced by MIDI controller 7 (which was also named “Volume”, actually “Volume MSB” to be precise).
Sample library instruments often also support MIDI controller 11 (Expression MSB) to influence the volume.
Of course, when using VSTi plugins in Cubase there is also an audio return channel (it returns audio from the plugin to Cubase), where volume can be changed as on every other audio channel.

In that case I’d recommend using Instrument Tracks instead of MIDI Tracks when starting off. Then you don’t need to really care about the MIDI Volume.

But for MIDI Volume most (all?) VSTis should respond to cc 7 messages to control the Instrument’s Volume. This is independent of the DAW involved and is part of the MIDI spec.

Hi thank you for your response

im importing midi-track from another Daw

i get my drum vst-ssd

but my hi-hat & my ride are way too low..

i will experiment what you say both thank you !

Thank you !

That’s the way (instrument tracks) !!

thank you

It’s dependent on the specific VSTi, but all the drum titles I know allow you to setup multiple audio outputs for individual drums in the kit. That lets you adjust the hi-hat’s audio level independently & also lets you, for example, process the audio with a compressor.

Ok cool raino i will look at this !
