Minor bug in Video Sound Playback

Hi Team

I’d like to report a possible bug in the playback of video sound when a “Video Playback Offset” is applied.

I have a video that has burnt in timecode that starts at 00:59:54:00 - the film itself starts at 01:00:00:00. I would therefore like to ensure that Dorico displays and assigms markers at the same timecode. I therefore set the “Video Playback Offset” to 00:59:54:00 and the display time of Dorico now correctly matches the Video BITC.

However, I no longer get sound. If I remove the offset I get sound back.

I am using version the latest version of Dorico - version 5.1.21.2098. I have not changed the sample rate of the audio interface.

Kind regards

James

Can you hear sound from the video itself, or is all sound gone?

Oh, sorry Derrek, I should have made that clearer.

I am referring to only the video sound. All ther sounds work fine.

James

Here is some more information:

  • The video I am syncing to is 8 minutes long (approx)
  • If I use an offset of 1 minute, 4 minutes ro 5 minutes - it works correctly.
  • If I use an offset that is longer than the duration of the video, ie longer than 8 mins, it doesn’t work and the bug appears.

BTW, I am offseting the video by 00:59:54:00 because Dorico does not offset in negative values, which is fine.

This may be related to an intermittent problem that we are aware of. Can you try the following and see if it fixes it:

  1. ensure the video properties in your project are set to the correct Video Playback Offset (00:59:54:00), and save the project file
  2. quit and restart Dorico
  3. open the Preferences dialog
  4. on the “VST Plug-ins” page, click on “Clear Audio Engine Cache”
  5. quit and restart Dorico again
  6. reopen the file

Hi Richard

Following the procedure you mentioned does not fix the issue.

James

Would you be able to send me the video file? You can email me at r dot lanyon at steinberg dot de. I won’t be able to take a look for a few days but will definitely do so.

Sure.

I’ll do that soon.

James

Done.

I’ve only just had time for a very quick look, but I wonder if what you actually want here is not to set the Video Playback Offset at all (or, rather, to leave it at 0), but instead to set the Timecode Start (to 00:59:54:00).

Really! Oh oh.

I’m beginning to feel a little stupid if that’s the case.

James

Yes, you’re right. I should have used that parameter instead.

I’m sorry I wasted your time on this - I’ll have to re-read the manual.

Thanks for your efforts and, once again, apologies for wasting your time.

James

No problem - I’m glad it’s OK now! These parameters are inevitably quite hard to understand because there are several different timelines and also quite a few different working practices we have to support, so it takes a while to get your head around how it all works. Video Playback Offset is where in the video’s timeline the playback of the video will start. In this case you originally specified a value that was “off the end” of the video so weird things would have happened.
